Fantastic weather made for an great day of bowls today in the Beinn an Tuirc Distillery sponsored Dick Potts Memorial Pairs.
3 groups of 6 teams played in a round robin format, with the 3 group winners and the highest ranked 2nd place team making it through to the semi finals.
First semi final was between the teams of David Reid and Gavin McLachlan up against Gary and Jimmy Anderson of Campbeltown Bowling Club. After a close start, the score was 2-1 to Jimmy and Gary. But in the fourth end, Gavin was able to ditch the white and eventually score a 4 to lead 5-2. A 1 from Jimmy in the penultimate end reduced the arrears to 2 but they were unable to draw level in the final end, scoring just 1 to leave David and Gavin with a 5-4 win.
The other semi final saw the Argyll's Joyce Oxborrow and Jamie McGougan facing Robert Todd and Johnnie McLean of Campbeltown BC. 5 shots without reply in the first 4 ends for Johnnie and Robert was cut down to 5-3 with 1 end to play. Despite the best efforts of Jamie and Joyce, they lost another 2 shots in the final end and meant Johnnie and Robert won 7-3.
In the final, Gavin and David took a 4-0 lead after 2 ends but some good bowls in the 3rd saw the score back to 4-3. The next 2 ends however saw some steady scoring from the Argyll pair to extend their lead to 10-3 with just 1 end to play. Chasing a 7 to draw level was always going to be a hard ask, and in the end Johnnie and Robert could only score 1, meaning it was David and Gavin who won this year's tournament with a final score of 10-4.
Vice President Stewart Blue then conducted the prize-giving ceremony. He started by thanking all those who played today, especially the visiting teams from Campbeltown BC. A note of thanks also went to the kitchen and bar staff who kept everyone well fed and watered across the day. And finally the presentation was made to the prize winners, which included generous prizes from our sponsors Beinn an Tuirc Distillery. Their continued support of this competition is very much appreciated.
