Campbeltown Bowling Club The page of Campbeltown Bowling Club to help members and friends around the world keep up t

The origins of Campbeltown Bowling Club are shrouded in the mists of history but it is safe to assume that the club was born out of the town’s senior bowling club, the Argyll. The first recorded meeting was held in the town hall committee room on 10th August 1905 when it was reported that some members of the Argyll club had canvassed the opinions of 100 local gentlemen for their opinions on forming a new club in the town. 72 had replied with 62 in favour, 5 against and 5 undecided. The chairman, Provost Mitchell, heard Ross Wallace explain that he, along with Sam Armour, Neil Watson, James Carson and Robert Smith had met with Alfred Lewis, chamberlain to the Duke of Argyll to try to identify suitable sites for the new green. His Grace, the Duke, was prepared to lease the ground and the lodge house at Stronvaar to the new club for nineteen years at an annual rental of £10. Wallace had concluded that an initial membership of 100 would be easily attainable and sustainable and recommended the formation of the club. He had gone so far as to contact the Scottish Bowling Association for their recommendation of a person to lay a new green and had been advised that Daniel Leslie of Bishopbriggs was the best available. Leslie visited the site and found it to be favourable and he quoted a price of around £380 with another £120 required to convert the outhouses into a bowls house, making a grand total of £500, eat your heart out Holyrood!

The last of the club competition finals were played over the last week.

Firstly the ladies past presidents was played on Sunday between Lorraine Brodie and Susan Gilchrist with Susan earning the win in a close game.

Tuesday night saw two finals, firstly the gents presidents final between Gavin McLachlan and Bobby Dalziel saw Bobby with a good lead going into the closing stages but a few strong ends from Gavin enabled him pull the deficit back and take the win.

Also on Tuesday night Steven Dickson managed to hold off a determined challenge from Jessie Andrew to win the 3 bowl trophy.

On Wednesday night the centenary trophy final between Robert Coffield and Jimmy Anderson saw Jimmy edge a close first set which he consolidated in the second set to take the title.

On Thursday in the 2 bowl final between Johnnie McLean and Ryan McLachlan, Johnnie gradually built up a lead which, although narrowed by Ryan, proved enough to see him over the line.

Lastly on Thursday Gavin McLachlan took an early lead against Jimmy Anderson in the past presidents trophy, this was pulled back by Jimmy though and a strong last few ends proved enough to see him to victory in another close game.

Congratulations to all the club competition prizewinners from this season.

This concludes the club outdoor competitions for this year with the traditional closing day finishing off the green season on Saturday.

Hopefully see you all on Saturday for one last throw of the outdoor season.

The George and Jenny Mackay memorial charity pairs took place in the club on Sunday September 6th, this year in aid of Campbeltown and District juvenile football association.
Games were played throughout the day in three sections of 5 teams with the 3 section winners and a highest runner up contesting the semi finals.
The first of these saw a close game between Robert Todd and Simon Rochford against Jimmy Anderson and Catherine Mceachran which ended up in a last bowl extra end win in Jimmy's favour.
The second semi final saw Johnnie McLean and Robert Kerr take an early lead over Ryan Johnston and John Macintosh which they managed to hold onto as the game progressed to take them through.
Jimmy and Catherine started very strongly in the final and despite Johnnie and Roberts best efforts ran out convincing winners for this year.
President Lorraine Brodie then conducted the prize giving thanking everyone involved in making the day a success and invited Alistair and Louise to present the prizes to the winners on the day.
Louise then spoke to thank all family and friends for helping throughout the day with special mention to Cadenheads for their continuous generous sponsorship of the prizes, the Juvenile football volunteers and families for their work and support on the day, the members for their support and local shops and businesses for the raffle donations which were very much appreciated.
Lastly Louise announced the total sum raised of £1615 for the Campbeltown and District juvenile football association, a tremendous amount raised and an excellent effort from all involved.
