Canterbury Running Tours

Great tours this morning, with both our 5k and 10k tours running.

Joining us for the first 5km were Rosie and Harrison from Portsmouth and Josh and Nick from Connecticut.🇬🇧🇺🇸

Josh ran our tour last September at the start of his Masters Degree at the University of Kent. Now, with just a couple of weeks to go, he brought his friend from home, Nick, along for a second tour.🙌

The boys left us after 5km and Rosie, Harrison and I continued on into the countryside for the second half of the 10km run. Rosie and Harrison are both training for various races: the Great South Run (Rosie) and the Richmond marathon (Harrison), and decided to leave the kids with grandparents to build a running tour into their respective training blocks. And I’m very happy they did.💪

Out for a first run after our hols and Canterbury and the grounds of St Augustine’s Abbey are looking dry. Not sure what John Tradescant the Elder would’ve made of this summer and our garden is as yellow as the sun. Hay baling season has started early as a result, and we saw plenty of today’s 10km run, plus some interesting new graffiti and the odd dash of green.

We might be visiting family on holiday but we’re still getting out early to run before the heat really builds. Life is good when you can run on the beach everyday, and then jump into the sea to cool off. Don’t worry, I’m managing to stay hydrated.🍺

Great early morning running tour with Debbie and Alan from Essex.

The couple are in town for a couple of days thanks to a relative visiting recently and recommending Canterbury. Both are avid runners who have completed the London Marathon on multiple occasions, but neither of whom got a place for 2027. Sound familiar? 🤣

They’ve also done running tours all over Europe and as well as managing his local Parkrun in Harlow, Alan is only three events away from completing the Parkrun A-Z, with only T, U and Z left to tick off the list.✅

Sunday runday, and after a football related lie in, a beast of an 11-mile loop over the hills of Bigbury and down through Chartham and back into the city.

I’m rather fond of a single track trail as it makes you feel like the path was made just for you to run down. That said, I met a fair few other runners coming the other way, and it was tough sledding at times as some of those paths don’t like people coming down them and are completely overgrown. Here are some of the nicer ones, along with the beautiful Kent vistas, river views and a family of swans.

10km running tour this morning with Ebba from Sweden and Elinor from Denmark.🇸🇪🇩🇰

The ladies are beginning an epic roadtrip that started in Dover and will take them through Wales, the Lake District and on to Scotland. Honoured that their first stop was our running tour.😊

Both live in Norway and work on cruise ships taking passengers through the Norwegian Fjords. My tour was recommended to them by their colleague Damian, who did the same 10km run (or one Swedish mile according to Ebba 🤣) with his wife back in May 2024. Thanks for recommending us!🙌

We had a great time running around the city and out into the surrounding countryside. Thanks again for booking my tour and I hope you have an amazing trip!

Looking for a reason to visit Canterbury this weekend?

Canterbury’s Medieval Pageant and Family Trail returns on Saturday, 4 July. The free, family-friendly event features hands-on historical activities, living history encampments, a Medieval Parade and other events across the city centre from 10:00am to 5:00pm.🏰

The 21-stop trail route will focus on celebrating Canterbury’s links to the Bayeux Tapestry. Measuring 68.38m long, the Bayeux Tapestry shows life in 11th-century England before and after the Norman Conquest, and was probably stitched in Canterbury, with inspiration from manuscript drawings in medieval books.

Taking inspiration from the Bayeux Tapestry the pageant organisers plan to create a new lifesize paper tapestry that celebrates 21st-century Canterbury.
