Knowing all of the things that we need to do in order to be healthy is not the hard bit. In fact, in this day and age, with information at our fingertips, most of us know exactly what we need to do in order to maximise healthβ¦ eat a varied diet with the right mix of proteins, carbs and fat, get plenty of sleep, drink enough water, go outside regularly, and get plenty of exercise etc, etc. The hard bit is finding the right balance so that in trying to live longer, we donβt forget to actually live. Eliminating things that we enjoy from our lives, because in excess they are considered bad for health is often not the best path. It might get quick results and take you towards a specific health goal, but if the overall goal is happiness, then we have to find balance. Finding healthy routines that we actually enjoy is key. If it feels like a chore, then we are unlikely to stick at it long enough for it to have a significant positive effect on our lives. When it comes to exercise, there are a million ways and more to get fit. But if you hate the process, then it will feel ten times harder, and the likelihood of quitting before seeing a significant change is very high. So if you can find an activity that you geneuinely enjoy, not just because of the health benefits, but because the process makes you happy, then you are likely to stick with it for the long term and see huge positive changes. If youβve stumbled across this post, then that might mean you have shown some interest in martial arts. If you havenβt already started your martial arts journey, then maybe consider it as an option. It's a very enjoyable pursuit, and health benefits are plenty! π

All children should be encouraged to try new things and find what they love. But having taught martial arts for over 15 years, and seen many children with autism train with us, itβs clear to see that children with autism gravitate towards activities like martial arts. Of course every child is different, and has different interests and needs, but because many traditional martial arts like Taekwondo, offer a way of training and developing individually and are very structured, as opposed to team sports for example, it has a huge appeal. The fundamental movements and patterns are a great tool and exercise for developing strength, flexibility, and coordination, but also channel the mind to focus on trying to perfect something. I have seen many autistic students flourish and achieve great things over the years, often having felt frustrated when trying other activities that just did not suit them. We all think differently from one another, and so itβs not so different from any neurotypical person simply choosing the activity that suits their personality. π

Grading is an important part of the martial arts process. Itβs a test to see if you are ready to take on the challenge of learning more, usually harder techniques, and another step closer to achieving black belt. Students are invited to grade when they have shown that they can consistently demonstrate their current syllabus to a standard that the instructor deems appropriate for that level, as well as a positive attitude towards their training and preparation. Remember, with increased rank comes an increase in responsibility too. Fellow students who are beginners or less experienced, will look up to their seniors and expect them to set an example. Donβt let them down! Be a good role model.
Good luck everyone π! If you have prepared well, the training will see you through ππ»

Patterns are like meditation π§ that keeps you strong πͺ
ITF patterns, or "Tuls' are sequences of fundamental techniques. Students learn another pattern each time they grade to a higher rank , and the patterns gradually increase in difficulty and complexity. These patterns challenge a student's balance, coordination, strength and flexibility, whilst simultaneously challenging the student's ability to focus and breath efficiently.
Practicing patterns can therefore have huge positive impact on general wellbeing. π

Going to the gym is great. It serves a purpose. And if you love it, then do it. If you find the gym boring and it feels like a chore, there are other ways of getting fit. There is so much to learn in martial arts, both physically and mentally, and whilst on the journey you might find that you were so focussed on other goals that you look up one day and realise how much your fitness has improved. π₯π€Έ
