This afternoon we took a couple of young horses away from home to the local arena to school, work on the flat and pop a few little cross poles… which is such an important part of their education 🐴

Flat work is the foundation of everything! We want them to learn to use their bodies correctly, develop balance, maintain a rhythm and work in a balanced, controlled pace and outline, rather than simply rushing from A to B 🐎

Then we can introduce little cross poles in a way that builds on those foundations — encouraging them to think for themselves, find their balance and develop coordination and confidence.

It teaches them to:
✨ Focus on their rider in a new environment
✨ Build confidence away from home
✨ Learn to deal with new surroundings, distractions and other horses
✨ Develop balance, rhythm and coordination
✨ Use themselves correctly and carry themselves in a balanced way
✨ Become more independent and adaptable
✨ Gain valuable experience for their future careers

We keep the fences small and the sessions positive — the aim isn’t to test them, but to build their confidence, develop correct foundations and set them up for the future 👏🏽❤️

Every trip, every schooling session and every new experience is another little piece of the puzzle in producing a confident, balanced and well-rounded young horse 🧩🐴

Callum long reigning a lovely, three year older breaker from Lisa Harrison Racing 🐴 He’s coming along brilliant, very responsive and a great attitude. We’ll keep you posted on his progress when he’s ridden away 🐎

A video from last week that I didn’t get round to sharing… one of our recently broken babies 🐴 out on the roads for the first time with the boss on the quad to make sure all went smoothly 🚙👌🏽 We spend a lot of time getting them used to passing traffic at our lonning end before we take them out on the roads so, as expected, all went well 👏🏽 Road work is a huge part of breaking horses in and pre-training here and we always take the young ones out with a more experienced horse to nanny them to start with and get their confidence up 🚗🚜🏍️🚌

Roadwork is very important to thoroughbreds and here’s why 👇🏽
* Strengthens bones and tendons. Walking and trotting on firm surfaces helps stimulate bone density and strengthens tendons and ligaments
* Builds cardiovascular fitness
* Improves muscle endurance
* Develops mental focus
* Warms the body safely
* Aids recovery
* Improves hoof quality

Thank you so much to Mary for trusting us with Betty’s rehab here at Brown D**e Stables 🐴 She has literally made a recovery that none of us can believe! 🥹😍 She’s gone home for a few months down time in the field and then all being well she’ll be coming back in a few months to start her breaking in process… happy horses and happy owners 🙏🏽🤍
