🥋 Well done to everyone who took part in today’s Chojinkai Club Championships!

There were some great performances today, but more importantly, there was some real progress.

Not everyone came away with a medal, but that’s not what today was all about. It was about having a go, challenging yourself and taking that next step.

Some who have previously been reluctant to compete got up and gave it a go. Others stepped up into the next category, putting themselves a little outside their comfort zone. They got involved, took part and gave it their best. That’s what it’s all about.

There were some difficult decisions to make, as there always are, but overall everyone did really well. It was also great to see some good sportsmanship throughout the day.

Remember, progress isn’t always measured by the medals around your neck. Sometimes it’s simply having the confidence to step onto the mat and give it a go when you might not have done before.

Well done, everyone. You should all be proud of yourselves.

And don’t forget to bring your medals along to classes next week! 🏅👊

🥋 GRADING UPDATE 🥋

We’ve got gradings coming up from next week, and we’ll be handing out grading letters in classes this week to those who we feel are ready.
Not everyone will be grading this time.

Some classes may have several students grading, some may have only one or two, and some may have nobody grading at all. There may also be venues where we don’t have any gradings this time.

That doesn’t mean people aren’t progressing. It just means we don’t think they’re quite ready yet.

We’ve given some students a little extra time this time around because of the summer, and if you’re not ready for this grading, the aim will be to get you ready for the start of December.

It would be great if everyone could grade every time, but that’s not how it works. You grade when you’re ready.

Keep training, keep improving and trust the process. 👊🥋

Great turnout for the self protection seminar at Yewdale Community Centre.

A really good mix of people, and the main aim was to give them a realistic look at what self-protection is actually about.

Based on my own experience of real confrontation, we talked about what happens when things get serious — the adrenaline, the fear, the emotional side, decision-making, positioning and, importantly, the law.

A big part of the seminar was about dispelling the myths around self-defence. What people think they can do, what they actually can do legally, and what they might realistically be capable of when the pressure is on.

I don’t want to give people a false sense of security by teaching them loads of techniques that they may never be able to pull off when things go wrong.

We did some practical work, but the idea was to keep things simple and give people one or two things they can actually understand, practise and have a chance of using under pressure.

For me, self-protection is just as much about avoiding trouble, recognising what’s happening and making good decisions as it is about the physical side.

A really good group, some great questions and some honest discussions.

Thanks to everyone who came along, and to Yewdale Community Centre for putting it on. 👊

One of the things we covered tonight was dealing with the hard stare.

That uncomfortable moment when someone is staring you down, trying to intimidate you or provoke a reaction.

We looked at how to deal with that situation without unnecessarily escalating it, while still maintaining confidence and presence.

It’s one of those things that sounds simple, but there’s a lot more to it than people realise.

Another small part of self-protection that often gets overlooked.

The whole club has really been built over the years through longstanding members, parents and recommendations, even from people who don’t train with us anymore.

This is why you don’t really see us advertising. We’d much rather people come through recommendations, come down, see what we do and decide for themselves if it’s something they actually want to be part of.

So thanks again to everyone who continues to recommend us. It genuinely means a lot and is a massive part of how the club has grown.

For anyone who’s been asking for information, I’ve put everything below 👇

🥋 THE NEW CHOJINKAI PRIVATE DOJO

Some of you might remember my old garage from lockdown, where I filmed the live classes and where we also trained in small groups when restrictions allowed.
It is now much bigger and fully equipped, and I’m going to be using it as our new Chojinkai Private Dojo, where Lewis and I can offer private and one-to-one training sessions.

I’ve had lots of interest over the years from people wanting one-to-one sessions, but it hasn’t always been possible to fit them in. Now we’re going to start making them available.

Initially, I’m looking at around one Saturday a month, with sessions booked directly with me.

These sessions can be tailored completely to what you want to achieve.

🥋 Karate & grading preparation – if you’re working towards your next grading, we can concentrate specifically on the techniques and areas you need to improve.

🎯 Technical development – perhaps there’s a particular technique you’re struggling with, or something that just doesn’t feel quite right. We can break it down, identify the limitations and work on improving it.

💪 Strength & flexibility – we can also use the equipment in the dojo to work on physical limitations that might be holding your karate back.

🛡️ Self-defence – if you simply want to learn practical self-defence on a one-to-one basis, that can also be arranged.

The big advantage of a private session is that we can spend the time focusing entirely on you — looking at what you’re good at, what you’re struggling with and where the weak links are.

From there, we can come up with a plan to improve them.

It’s basically a dedicated space where we can slow things down, break things apart and build them back better.

If you think a private session could benefit you, whether that’s for your karate, a grading, technical development or self-defence, drop me a message and let me know.

Initially, spaces will be limited as I’ll only be opening up around one Saturday a month.
