I am a qualified SMS saddle fitter, a trainee SMS bridle fitter and a qualified BHS coach. With years of hands on experience working and competing in the industry in multiple disciplines.

When we look at a horse's back, it's tempting to think of it simply as the place where the saddle sits. But beneath that saddle lies something fascinating: a complex system of muscles working together to allow movement, support posture, and help carry the rider.

Why the back matters
Here's the key point some people miss: back movement isn't created by the back alone. In fact, there's very little movement in this area.

So where does the movement we see come from? It's driven by the movement of the limbs and the head and neck.

Next time you watch a horse move, look beyond the back itself.

This is the lovely Topper and his owner Christina Winning their class, then taking Reserve Ridden Champion at Llanilar Show! 🏵️
Earlier this year I fitted Topper with a beautiful Ideal Saddle Company T&T Dressage in brown. Giving Christina the flexibility to do both showing and dressage.
I can’t wait to see what this impressive pair get up to next.
