The Wessex Cup 2024 🏆

The coveted Wessex Cup has this weekend been dusted off and is now midway through an exciting restoration, kicking off the rejuvenation of a legendary mixed doubles badminton tournament.

The Wessex Cup was first handed to Clarice Radford and Mike Thomas in 1975, and then to other winning pairs throughout the 70s and 80s, with the most recent engraving being Gloria Villis and Grahame Burnell in 1990 - 34 years ago!

Bringing this exciting event back to life now feels relevant with the club’s renewed appetite for healthy, competitive badminton whilst being one of the most friendly and sociable clubs in the area.

We plan to run the tournament between March and May 2024, with fixtures potentially taking place during Thursday night club sessions.

The format is still being worked on but we envisage players being paired at random, with handicaps being applied to more experienced pairs to help keep games balanced and inclusive - this is a tournament open to all members who enjoy playing badminton!
