The Galway Races Summer Festival opens tonight, kicking off seven days of mixed-code action that runs all the way through to Sunday 2 August. First race goes off at 5:10pm. Tonight's feature is the Connacht Hotel (Q.R.) Handicap — the so-called amateur Derby, a Premier Handicap worth around €110,000 run over approximately 2m1f. The whole week carries over €2 million in prize money, with the €270,000 Tote Galway Plate on Wednesday and the €270,000 Guinness Galway Hurdle on Thursday the absolute stand-out prizes.

On the UK side, Southwell (AW), Ayr, Windsor and Ripon all have cards today — solid betting propositions across a mix of handicaps, maidens and conditions races on a typical summer Monday.

What a day on the Flat. Let's talk about it.

The headline act was stunning. Kalpana turned the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes on its head at Ascot, putting away the 6/5 favourite Calandagan — the reigning world number one — to win the first-ever £2 million renewal. She'd finished behind him in this same race twelve months ago. Not today. Andrew Balding's mare hit the front inside the final two furlongs and simply refused to be caught, with Benvenuto Cellini back in third for Ballydoyle.

The form book will note Calandagan gave weight in class to a field that included seven Group 1 winners from four countries and two Japanese raiders. He ran his race. She was just better on the day. That's what the King George does — it delivers moments.

Up at York, Item bounced back from his Derby disappointment in style, landing the Group 2 York Stakes under Rob Hornby to underline just how good he can be when things go right.

Three significant moves in the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes market ahead of the 3:35 at Ascot — and they're worth paying close attention to.

🔥 KALPANA — The big one. The Andrew Balding mare was available at 12-1 overnight and has been steaming all morning, now as short as 6-1 best price. That's a dramatic halving of her odds in the space of a few hours, and the support shows no sign of stopping. She's the only British-trained runner in the field, boasts a superb Ascot record, and finished a length behind Calandagan in this very race last year.

🔥 MASQUERADE BALL — The Japanese raider has been finding support throughout the week and is now trading at 7/2, in from 4-1. A horse that went within a head of beating Calandagan in the Japan Cup doesn't need excuses — the market is clearly treating him seriously on British debut.

❄️ BENVENUTO CELLINI — Running the other way. The Irish Derby hero was a general 3/1 shot earlier in the week and has drifted out to 9/2 this morning. Ryan Moore takes the ride but the money isn't following him. Worth noting.
