Chester-le-Street Town U11 Girls
The girls faced a real challenge today in extremely windy conditions, and we knew the weather would play a huge part in the game. We made the decision to play into the wind during the first half, knowing it would require plenty of hard work, resilience and disciplined defending.
Olivia started in goal and produced some excellent saves throughout the first half, ensuring she got her body behind the ball and giving the team confidence at the back.
Rose and Sapphire began in defence and were outstanding, dealing with long balls carried by the wind and battling for every challenge. In midfield, Rebecca, Brooklyn and Luna worked tirelessly for the team, competing for possession and looking to drive us forward whenever opportunities arose.
Emelia led the line up front and, although service was difficult at times due to the conditions, she continued to work hard and press the opposition whenever the ball came her way.
As the half progressed, Marnie and Holly came into defence and immediately continued the strong defensive work that had been required from the first whistle. Olivia and Abigail also came on in the wide areas, showing great determination in the tackle and looking to carry the ball forward whenever possible.
After absorbing plenty of pressure, the opposition managed to find a breakthrough midway through the first half and took the lead. Rather than letting their heads drop, the girls responded brilliantly, battling even harder and looking to get the ball further up the pitch.
Their efforts were rewarded when Mia demonstrated her usual goal-poaching instincts. Finding space with the ball at her feet, she fired home from around ten yards out to level the score and send the teams into half-time 1-1.
At the break, we spoke about how the opposition would now have to face the same challenge of playing into the wind. The message was simple: keep working hard, move the ball well and look for opportunities to test their goalkeeper.
The girls came out for the second half and did exactly that. Every player continued to battle for possession, drive at opponents and support one another. With the teams so evenly matched, it always felt like a single goal would decide the game.
As the pressure mounted, we won a corner. Luna stepped up and delivered an excellent ball into the box, causing problems for the defence. The cross was turned into the net by an opposition defender, giving Chester-le-Street Town the lead.
Both sides continued to push and compete until the final whistle, but no further goals followed, securing a hard-earned victory for Chester-le-Street Town.
This was a fantastic game between two evenly matched teams and a great spectacle for the spectators. More importantly, it highlighted just how far this group of girls has come, showing resilience, teamwork and determination in difficult conditions.

Chester-le-Street Town Player of the Match: Rose – who was outstanding at the back, winning her battles, sweeping up loose balls and driving the team forward with some excellent passing.
