In Japanese martial arts, Buyu (武友) translates directly to “martial friend” or “warrior friend”. It describes a deep, unique bond formed between practitioners on the tatami through shared physical challenge, sweat, and mutual respect.
The term is constructed from two Japanese kanji:
Bu (武): Meaning martial, military, or warrior.
Yu (友): Meaning friend or companion.

Kajō chikusei 花情竹性
“As kajō chikusei teaches us, one must strive to be as gentle as a flower, and as straight – moreover as straightforward – as bamboo. The essence of a flower is nature at work, the essence of bamboo is a natural way of life. Ninpō is a great warrior’s path open only to those whose heart is in the right place.”

What an absolutely unforgettable TaiKai weekend.
To see students travel from the USA, Switzerland, Spain, Italy, Ireland, England, and Wales to come together through Budo was something truly special. The training was exceptional, but just as meaningful were the evenings spent together sharing food, friendship, stories, and laughter. These are the moments that remind us that Budo is far more than technique alone — it is about people, connection, and the bonds we build along the Way.
I would like to express my deepest gratitude to Kancho James Wright for so generously sharing his immense knowledge, experience, and understanding of the arts we practise. Every moment of instruction carried depth and meaning, and I feel humbled and honoured to have learnt so much this weekend. It is a privilege to be part of this Budo family 🙇♂️
I would also like to give heartfelt thanks to Kyoshi Ian Thomas for organising the TaiKai and for the countless hours of work carried out quietly behind the scenes to make everything possible. So much dedication, effort, and care goes into events like these, often unseen by most of us, and it is deeply appreciated by everyone who attended 🙇♂️
Thank you to everyone who travelled, trained, supported, and shared in such an incredible weekend. Memories like these stay with us for a life

If you don’t immediately grasp the importance of a moment, resist the urge to overthink. Simply move forward with the intent of reaching Mushin 無心 -a state of being “empty” yet fully present and receptive. It is our ordinary, everyday mind that limits our vision to our own desires. By silencing the ego, we allow nature to take the lead. To truly exist as a martial artist, one must master the art of transcending the self.
