Today’s exercise — The 1% Practice

Choose one thing worth becoming significantly better at over the next five years.

Now deliberately make the action very small.

Not:

“I will study Japanese for two hours every day.”

Perhaps:

“I will learn one budō term properly each day.”

Not:

“I will completely reorganise my teaching curriculum.”

Perhaps:

“After every class I will record one teaching observation.”

Then ask yourself:

“Could I realistically continue doing this even on a bad day?”

If the answer is no, make it smaller.

Finally, identify one negative behaviour that is also quietly compounding and ask:

“If I repeat this for another ten years, where does it lead?”

That question can make apparently insignificant habits look very different.

A thought for today

A martial artist’s ability rarely comes from one extraordinary training session.

It is the residue of thousands of ordinary training sessions that were not missed.

The same is true of much of life.

Don’t underestimate what becomes possible when a modest discipline is given enough time.

Sometimes you don’t need a new circle to level up, sometimes you just need to help the circle you’re in level up. Go run. Go train. Go lift. Go be awesome.
