Weight isnt everything

Its a useful guide, it can be motivational as a goal

But it isnt the be all and end all

Myself and many of my clients have found fitness finally clicks for us when weight stop being the driving factor behind all decision making

One of the biggest problems with "all or nothing" thinking is that it changes your definition of success.

Instead of success being "doing enough to keep moving forward", it becomes "doing everything exactly as planned."

That's a standard almost nobody can meet for long.

Life will interrupt your training. You'll miss sessions. You'll eat meals you didn't plan. You'll have busy weeks.

The question isn't whether those things happen.

It's whether you treat them as a normal part of life or as proof that you're failing.

The people who stay consistent aren't usually the most disciplined.

They've just stopped expecting perfection.

What's one thing you've been telling yourself you need to do perfectly?

Gym Anxiety

Everyones been there

Everyone has felt that daunting feeling walking in for the first or tenth or hundredth time of just not quite feeling like they belong

Looking around at everyone else who just looks so much more like they belong than you

They wear the right gear, do exercises you haven't seen before, they're in great shape

It all makes you feel inadequate

But what you don't see is that persons first visit

The first time they walked in feeling those exact same feelings

Because everyone has felt that anxiety

But fitness culture has gotten to a point now where we place so much importance on whether we are a 'fitness person' or not

And it doesn't need to be that way

The gym is a place you go to get fitter and healthier, thats it

We don't need to put so much pressure on it

And honestly if someones is making you feel vad for turning up, they're the problem

And they can absolutely do one

You don't just make a mistake. You make it mean something about you.

You miss a workout.

You eat more than you planned.

You have a bad week.

And instead of thinking:

"That didn't go to plan."

You think:

"I'm so inconsistent."

"I'm terrible at this."

"I always do this."

"I'll never be able to stick to anything."

That's the problem.

Because there's a massive difference between "I made a mistake" and "I'm failing."

One describes something you did.

The other becomes a judgement about who you are.

And when you start seeing yourself as someone who always fails, it's much easier to give up.

You don't need to pretend you haven't made a mistake.

You don't need to justify it or pretend it doesn't matter.

Just don't turn one imperfect moment into a story about who you are.

You had a bad meal.

You missed a session.

You had a difficult week.

That's all.

Learn from it if there's something to learn.

Then get on with it.

One mistake doesn't need to become an identity.

You want to really build consistency?

Stop telling yourself you failed all the time.

The whole culture around fitness treating an off-plan meal, missed workout or bad week as a "failure" is messed up.

Because what actually happened?

You ate a meal you didn't plan for.

You missed a session.

You had a week where life got in the way.

That's it.

But then we attach this massive meaning to it.

"I've failed."

"I've ruined my progress."

"I need to start again."

And that's where the real problem starts.

Because once you've decided you've failed, there's no reason not to keep going.

One meal becomes a weekend.

One missed session becomes two weeks off.

A bad week becomes "I'll start again Monday."

You don't need to be perfect to be consistent.

You need to stop treating every deviation from the plan as evidence that the plan isn't working.

Consistency isn't doing everything right.

It's being able to do something imperfectly, recognise it, and carry on without turning it into a big deal.

You didn't fail.

You just did something different from what you'd planned.

Now get on with your life, it doesn't need to be anything more serious than that.

You walk into the gym and suddenly feel like everyone is looking at you.

What you're wearing.

How you look.

Whether you actually look like you belong there.

Maybe everyone else seems more confident, more experienced, or more "gym-like" than you.

So instead of focusing on your workout, you're worrying about whether you're doing the right thing, wearing the right clothes, or looking the part.

But here's the thing:

You don't need to look like you belong in the gym to belong in the gym.

You don't need the perfect body.

You don't need the latest gym clothes.

You don't need to lift heavy.

You don't even need to know exactly what you're doing.

You just need to turn up.

Fitness should help you feel more comfortable in your own skin, not make you feel like you need to change who you are before you're allowed to belong.

This is the kind of thing I talk about every day.
