As of today, 16th December, the law which entitles drivers to tow up to 3500kg has been passed.
Your entitlement will automatically be added to your full licence.

Just be sure to check that your vehicle towing weight and do some training to be confident at towing heavier trailers or caravans.

Unfortunately, you still cannot have a combined weight of more than 3500kg
You cannot take a B+E Test to be able to tow more and the law still has not been changed.

But, you can tow more if you display L plates and have someone with you who has grandfather rights or has passes their B+E Test.

If you are planning on towing without having any training, please read about the speed limits while towing.
They are in the Highway Code.

Remember not to use the 3rd lane on motorways.
Also, have a bigger gap between you and the vehicle in front as it's going to take longer to stop.

The process to change the law in Parliament to allow all car drivers to tow a trailer up to 3,500kg maximum authorised mass (MAM) has restarted.

The law will not change until later in the year and we’ll let you know when it will be introduced.

Until then, unless they hold a full B+E entitlement, drivers who gained their licence after 1 January 1997 will only be able to tow a trailer weighing up to 3,500kg if they:

✔️ display L plates and
✔️ are supervised by a driver who has had a car and trailer licence entitlement for 3 years or more

When the law changes come into force DVLA will update driving licence records to reflect the changes.

The BE category will be added when a new photocard driving licence is issued. Drivers do not need to contact DVLA for this to happen. It will be done automatically.

Motor movers are very useful once on site.

I hope you do not get to meet a fellow caravaner on a narrow lane and need to back up.

A few hours training should give you the confidence to deal with this situation.

Be careful not to tow more than your licence says you can until the law is changed later on this year.

Chichester Trailer Training recommends doing a 3 hour training session to give you confidence in towing.

The Police or VOSA can still stop you to complete safety checks.

The correct fitting of the Brakeaway Cable is an important check.
Safe, secure distribution of load is also a concern to ensure a stable caravan or trailer.

Following the recent government consultation, car drivers will be able to tow a trailer without a taking a test 🚗

This change will mean drivers who passed their car test after 1 January 1997 will be able to tow a trailer up to 3,500kg when the law is changed. This will be as soon as possible.

✔️Drivers who passed their car test before 1 January 1997 can already tow without a car and trailer test, so are not affected by this change.

This will allow us to offer more lorry tests 🚛

Caravan and motorhome owners face fines due to number plate rule DRIVERS have been warned their caravans and motorhome must display the number plates of the road car which is towing it when they are travelling this summer.
