On the course 1st-17th September

The weather really has turned on us and currently experiencing the feast of our feast or famine rain pattern. This month so far we have had 100mm (4") of rain, and that makes it 194mm(7.6") in the last 31 days since the weather changed on August 18th. The weather forecast is suggesting it to remain unsettled but signs of something much drier after Saturday 19th and looks to be nice the whole of next week..... let's hope so for our maintenance days.
Jobs on the course:-

I have been on holiday but the lads have done a great job under very difficult circumstances. The weather has been a massive hindrance and in conjunction with now excessive growth, has been a challenge keeping on top of the cutting but they have done a great job. Other than the cutting there isn't anything new to report other than a fungicide was applied on the 3rd of September to clear the persistent Anthracnose that wouldn't clear. It also prevented any fusarium disease that is now becoming more probable in developing into these mild, damp days, something we need to monitor more this time of year.

Planned jobs for immediate future:-
▪︎ The main thing to report is the maintenence days on September 21st and 22nd which needs reporting. This a very busy one as we have 4 contractors in
1. Fairways to be verti-drained again, requiring the front 9 to be closed on Monday 21st and back 9 closed on Tuesday 22nd
2. Monday - Greens to be deep scarified, light verti-cut and cut
3. Tuesday - Greens deep aerated with the Air2G2, followed by an oversow of Bent seed and slightly heavier top dress of 10 tonne of sand.
4. Our digger driver is in for 3 weeks, week commencing 21/9, 28/9 and 5/10 with the main jobs being :-
▪︎ Scraping thatchy walkways at path ends of 5th & 15th as well as in front of the 12th tee, same as we've done left of 1st green and right of 6th and 12th greens which seemed to have worked well.
▪︎ Ditches made deeper to right of 15th and left of 13th
▪︎ Dig out tree stumps to right of the 13th tee and back of 17th green to prevent them sprouting shoots again.
▪︎ Clear area to right of red 4th tee, adjacent to the irrigation tank, to open up line of sight to the right of the 4th fairway.
▪︎ Clearing the larger ditches at 1st/7th, 6th/8th, 12th/15th, 14th/17th.

🏌️‍♂️ MENS Directors Trophy Medal – What a Finish!
Quite a golfing comp! Two gents battled all the way to a dramatic play‑off, and the win was clinched by just ½ a point.

Congratulations to Steven Hesford on securing the victory, and commiserations to Callum Kellie, who pushed it right to the wire.

An outstanding match from both players — great skill, great spirit, great golf.

Junior Captain’s Day 🎉
A huge well‑done to Aaron O’Berg, who raised an incredible £1,200 (and still counting) for Prostate Cancer UK through his Junior Captain’s charity efforts — a fantastic achievement and a credit to the club.

And congratulations to his younger sister Isla, who claimed 1st prize on the day! 🏆
A brilliant effort from all our Junior Section — well done!

On the course 18th - 31st August
Our usual feast or famine weather continues. With only 15mm(0.6") of rain falling in the first 17 days of this month, to 94mm(3.7") falling in the last 14 days of the month. This means 109mm(4.3") in total fell in August. As August draws to a close, it also marks the end of the meteorological Summer which was a great Summer weather-wise in my opinion. So the 92 days of June, July and August gave us 259mm(10.2") which on the face of it, doesn't seem as dry as it was perceived, but this rain fell in only 41 days where rain fell out of the 92 days, implying when it did rain, we got quite a lot in a short space of time.
The forecast for the foreseeable is to remain unsettled unfortunately but does suggest dry periods in between.

Jobs on the course:-
▪︎ Wetting agent and seaweed applied to the greens, tees and approaches
▪︎ Drains cleared in the 11th green under the caps. These tend to get covered with debris from grass clippings and sand, hence they work slower sometimes. A Quick clear and they work fine again.
▪︎ Clear a blocked drain on the 13th
▪︎ Liquid feed applied to the greens
▪︎ Leaves picked up with the Super 500. Leaves are falling early due to the extreme heat and drought conditions. It's a self defence of the trees and known as a false Autumn.
▪︎ T-Thatch and Rocastem applied to the greens, in preparation for the scarify planned for maintenance Monday on the 21st September
▪︎ Some before and after pictured of the 13th fairway and pitching green, showing how quickly things recover when the rains return.

Plans for the immediate future:-
▪︎ A very busy maintenance days are due on September 21st and 22nd September. We plan to Deep scarify, verti-cut, oversow with Bent seed and top dress the greens on the 21st, with another Air2G2 deep aeration on the 22nd.
Also, we plan to Verti-drain the fairways again on both days meaning the front 9 will closed on the Monday 21st and the back 9 closed on the Tuesday 22nd for safety reasons.
Finally, our digger driver is due in for 3 weeks( week commencing 21st, 28th September and 5th October) to do some more works. This has worked well the last couple of years, taking advantage of the drier conditions whilst using heavy machinery.
▪︎ When its dry enough we plan to cut back all the rough ready for winter, but importantly we need to collect as much of the clippings as possible. This prevents feeding the existing sword and over time should thin it out. So the Super 500 will be used for this task.

On the course 4th-18th August

This period was both extremely dry and very hot with temperatures in excess of 32-33C at times. We only had 32mm with 17mm falling on the night of Monday 17th into Tuesday 18th. The forecast is suggesting much cooler temperatures with much needed rain but is suggesting it settling down again this Friday and into the weekend.

Jobs on the course:-
▪︎ With everything burning off there wasn't much cutting. Just the areas that was getting water. These being the greens, immediate surrounds and tees.
▪︎ Liquid feed on the greens to help through the dry period
▪︎ Greens Sprinkler heads and distance discs trimmed round in the tees and fairways
▪︎ Sorted some sprinkler heads out.. replacing ones that had stopped spinning and installing swing arms to raise a couple that were too low.
▪︎ Divoting of tees and fairways
▪︎ Watering of the tees but mainly the greens was a huge priority, trying to replace the 7-8mm daily loss through evapotranspiration which we experienced during the peak of the heat and wind. This required about 20 minutes a green on average just to replace that, as well as hand watering of hot spots that required more.
▪︎ Try to protect the thinner areas that developed due to heat stress and the disease Anthracnose. These areas had wetting agent granules and Bents seed applied.
▪︎ Maintenance days(17th and 18th) went well. With the plant still under stress we sarel rolled instead of an aggressive verti-cut. I felt putting holes in the green would be more beneficial with the incoming rain due.
Followed with a light top dress of 5 tonne with an oversow of 60kg of Bent seed after.
The main event was the use of the Air2G2 on the greens. This does a similar job to the verti-drain in which deep aeration and decompaction occurs but there is no surface disruption. It uses compressed air through 3 tines, 12" deep, so this will be the way forward from now on. The heavy rain on the Monday night post top dress washed the sand in nicely.

Plans for the immediate future:-
▪︎ I'm predicting that cutting will increase again now the cooler, wetter conditions has arrived which is more conducive to growth.
▪︎ Try and get some of the China clay sand into a couple more bunkers, but with a busy fixture list its not easy. We are trying to target bunkers that have already been drained and turf lined so we don't have to scrape out the new sand.

Captain Jonathan Pitt treated members to a brilliant weekend of golf, prizes, refreshments and sunshine, creating a truly enjoyable two‑day celebration at Chorley Golf Club.

The men battled through 36 holes across Saturday and Sunday.
The ladies competed over 18 holes on Sunday.

Excellent scoring, great camaraderie, and perfect weather made for a memorable event, finishing with a prize presentation on Sunday evening.
