Derwent AC Cockermouth Derwent Athletic Club is a local running club aimed at all abilities, based in Cockermouth. We also run a number of local races each year.

The club meets twice a week to train on Tuesdays & Thursdays at 18:30 @ Cockermouth Leisure Centre.

How has it got to this time of year already?!

With the evenings getting darker, please remember to bring a charged head torch to training and wear something high-vis.

Naomi, Holly, Olivia and Lucy took on the Keswick Half Marathon yesterday – a challenging, hilly road race with around 390m of ascent. The route takes runners around the shores of Derwentwater, with a little loop up through Stair to add a few extra hills!

Naomi and Lucy were using the race as part of their marathon training, with Naomi clocking a course PB.

Lucy ran alongside Holly, who was taking on her very first half marathon! Having only previously run as far as 16km, Holly stepped up to the 13.1-mile distance and smashed it!

Olivia was the quickest of the four ladies, finishing with a fantastic new half marathon PB of her own!

Well done to all four – four very different goals, but four brilliant performances! 💜💛

Jamie, Toby and Dylan represented Derwent AC at the Northern Road Relays in Sunderland today, competing in the U18 category.

All three lads are just 15 years old, making them some of the youngest runners in the field, but they certainly held their own against the older competition, bringing the team home in an impressive 19th place out of 30 teams!

Their individual 5K splits were seriously impressive too:

🔥 Jamie – 18:16
🔥 Toby – 18:11
🔥 Dylan – 19:20

To put those times into perspective, that’s some seriously quick running from three 15-year-olds!

If they’re running this fast at 15, we can’t wait to see what the future holds as they continue to develop, get stronger and get even faster.

Well done lads – a brilliant performance! 👏💜💛

Congratulations to Phil who came overall 2nd place, won his age category and totally aced the Sport in Action 10k in Carlisle in a time of 00:35:18 today.

Well done to Rob P who also took part. Both men only completed the Great North Run last week. This racing malarkey is rather addictive.

💙 Running for Pete 💙

Earlier this year, our Derwent AC family was devastated by the tragic loss of one of our members, Pete Faulkner, who was sadly killed in a road traffic collision.

Pete was a hugely passionate and talented fell runner. He completed the 5 Valleys Ultra last year and had been looking forward to taking on the 7 Valleys Ultra this year.

Although Pete can't be on the start line himself, one of his fellow fell runners and Derwent AC teammates, Alistair, will be taking on the 7 Valleys Ultra in Pete's place — running in his memory and helping to keep Pete's love of the fells alive.

Alistair has also set up a GoFundMe to raise money that will be put aside for Pete's young son, Finn, so that he can continue his own fell running journey.

Finn has already joined a local junior fell running club and is loving getting out and taking part in local fell races. This weekend, he'll be taking on the Future Valleys race, while Hannah, Finn's mum and Pete's partner, will be taking on her very first fell race — the 2 Valleys.

It's incredibly special to see Pete's love of fell running being carried on by Finn, Hannah and the wider running community. ❤️

Congratulations to Jason and Sammy on completing the Maverick Lakes X-Trail 25K today!

The 25K is classed as the half-marathon distance, although it’s actually around 25km (15.5 miles), taking runners through some fantastic Lakeland scenery. The route heads towards Stickle Tarn and around the Langdale area before returning via trails including the Cumbria Way and around Loughrigg Tarn.

Jason had originally planned to take on the ultra marathon distance, but unfortunately the poor weather meant that wasn’t an option today.

A tough day out in the Lakes, but both got it done! 💪

Sheena, Naomi, Howard, Joe, Clive, Tony, Louisa and Dave took part in Bower Park parkrun 250th event this morning which coincided with our club championships too. To celebrate, everyone was asked to wear green 💚

Well done to Louisa and Sheena for vaining new event PBs and to Naomi who did a 10mile warm up by running in from Cockermouth.
