We are just over halfway through national antibullying week. Around 22% of students report having been bullied within an educational setting.
For Students with Disabilities, this number is up to three times higher. Between 60 and 70% of Students with Disabilities among the same cohorts report being bullied. This is entirely unacceptable, and we must take a stand against this.
Attached are some tips fo the Anti-bullying alliance on what to do if you're facing bullying:
1) Don't keep it to yourself - tell someone you trust
2) Don't retaliate
3) Try to surround yourself with people who make you feel good
4) Don't blame yourself it's not your fault
5) Be proud of who you are
Alongside this at the SU we have a number of support services, if you're being bullied, mistreated, discriminated against or just need a chat feel free to contact either:
- Myself (Students with Disabilities Officer): [email protected]
- VP Welfare: [email protected]
- SU Advice: [email protected]
Please remember you're not alone, we are all here to support you not only through your education, but to support you as an individual and your needs.
At the University of Essex Students Unions, we really want to know how you are, head to https://www.essexstudent.com/howareyou/ for some tips and support on a number of things such as: feeling overwhelmed, feeling isolated, struggling with online learning, struggling with motivation, or struggling with mental health, whatever it is we are here to support you. You can also submit a Typeform telling us how you are (this can be done anonymously, just click 'next' when asked for your name and email address)
