Feeling tired all the time isn’t always due to the demands of life or just ‘getting older’.
Many people I speak to are taking an iron tablet because they feel like their energy is low.
While iron deficiency can absolutely contribute to fatigue, there are many other reasons why your energy may be low - from poor sleep and blood sugar imbalances to stress, digestion, thyroid health and nutrient absorption.
And taking iron supplements ‘just in case’ may not always be the right approach.
In my latest blog, I explore:
🥱 Common causes of fatigue
🥱 When iron may (or may not) be the issue
🥱 The risks of supplementing iron ‘just in case’
🥱 Why getting to the root cause is key
If you’re tired all the time and wondering what your body may be trying to tell you, this blog is for you.
We are all tired sometimes. But if you are feeling tired on an ongoing basis (and you don’t know why) something isn’t right. Your body is trying to send you a message.

FAQ: Will I have to give up all the foods I love and never drink alcohol or eat chocolate again?
Yes!
*Only joking*
I know that with some nutrition practitioners, you are likely to leave your first session with a plan to go gluten-free, dairy-free, caffeine-free and fun-free and are also highly likely never to return!
In reality, I know that this approach doesn’t work, no matter how ill someone is feeling. Depending on what we are trying to achieve, there may be periods of time where it is suggested that you remove some things from your diet. In some cases, this may be in your best interests that this removal is permanent (for example, gluten where you have coeliac disease or other auto-immune disease).
But my aim is always to expand your diet as much as possible rather than reduce it and to keep any periods of temporary reduction to a minimum – this way you will always get a wider range of nutrients and lower risk of developing deficiencies.
My approach is about finding foods that you love (that your body will also thank you for) and gradually changing the way you eat, ensuring that you have the tools and coaching to make this as easy as possible.
After all, abstinence is a good thing that should always be practiced in moderation…so someone once said 🤔

I regularly speak to people at shows and a very common view I hear is that 'you can't take too much Vitamin D'.
I think this is off the back of the pandemic when eventually it became better known publicly that Vitamin D was helpful in supporting the immune system.
All supplements have the potential to do harm, even though they may be perceived as more 'natural' than medications.
Supplements can worsen your symptoms/health condition if not well thought out. They can interact with each other, any medications you are on and yes, you can also take too much.
More does not equal better.
Take care about where you get your supplement advice from. While well-meaning, getting advice from friends, family, Facebook groups or the lady in the post office queue is unlikely to be the best option.
Some of the 'advice' I see online could keep me awake at night. This is a massive issue.
It's not just from members of the public but also from other practitioners, operating beyond their professional boundaries and training.
I am seeing more reports of Vitamin D overdose. This situation was accidental but illustrates the principle that too much can be harmful.
A very sad situation for this little boy, caused by a faulty product and lack of notification.
I feared my son had a brain tumour but he'd been poisoned with vitamin D
Investigations found Roo had been accidentally poisoned with a dose of vitamin D prescribed for growing pains.

When you talk to people about food, day in, day out, people expect you to be a great cook! 👩🍳
My comedy apron, bought as a joke with a semblance of truth, says 'I kiss better than I cook'.
When I first start cooking as a teenager, I always hated the time pressure.
We had a monster of a home economics teacher, that left me feeling stressed about the whole thing.
My sister also trained as a chef and always came home with wonderful creations. So, cooking wasn't much on my radar (but I enjoyed the eating!😋)
When I first left home, I remember eating a load of frozen processed crap. It just wasn't important to me at the time.
Following a decade of trying to balance my raging health symptoms – painful periods, bad skin, unpredictable digestion, energy all over the place – I began studying to be a nutritional therapist. Over the next few years, so many of the missing pieces of the jigsaw puzzle gradually fell into place.
I began to understand in depth the impact of my diet and lifestyle on my own symptoms. Stress was a major trigger for my symptoms as well as helping to keep them going.
In the beginning I felt like a bit of a charlatan as many of my contemporaries had a ‘Good Life’ style upbringing and recognized the value of broccoli from an early age.
My mum did cook too, but as a child of the 80’s, I was raised on pot noodles and wagon wheels and ‘forced’ to eat one brussels sprout each Christmas.
But I think this background means I can relate strongly to what many of my clients are battling with. My clients often comment on my realistic, moderate, and non-judgmental style.
I caught on fast and was soon totally hooked on the power of food, nutrients and lifestyle medicine and their ability to change so dramatically how you feel. It’s all had such a significant impact on my own health and now I am passionate about helping others to transform how they feel too.
And these days, I'm a much better cook too! 😋
If you'd like to see what better food can do for you, come & join my Spring Recharge Programme - Nourish & Renew. A 7-day Whole Food Cleanse to get you into action 😍
