Assertiveness is something many carers struggle with—especially when guilt, pressure, and family expectations are involved.
But being assertive isn’t about being difficult… it’s about being clear, respectful, and sustainable in the way you care.
Here are 10 gentle reminders for carers and families supporting a loved one with dementia:
🌿 You can care deeply and still have boundaries
🌿 You don’t need to explain every decision
🌿 “No” is a complete sentence
🌿 Your needs matter too
🌿 It’s okay if others don’t always agree
🌿 Asking for help is a strength, not a weakness
🌿 You don’t have to do everything alone
🌿 Repeating your boundary calmly is powerful
🌿 Taking a break is necessary, not selfish
🌿 You deserve support as much as the person you care for
One of the most important things I remind carers is this:
👉 You cannot pour from an empty cup.
Assertiveness isn’t about pushing others away—it’s about protecting your ability to continue caring.

Cognitive stimulation 1:1 sessions
Spend time with your loved one living with dementia or a related condition.
We often think, “I’m too busy, I don’t have time.” But small changes in your daily routine can make a big difference for both of you.
Choose activities that are meaningful to them, based on their interests, skills and abilities.
Plan ahead – preparation is key. In fact, 80% is preparation and 20% is the activity itself.
Start simple. Observe what works, and then slowly build up. And remember, if something doesn’t go to plan, that’s okay – there is always another day.
