Last Saturday, EEE hosted their first club show of the season, with eight EEE boxers stepping into the ring.
First up for the home club was Henley Price, who took part in a Skills bout against Sam Merchant of Maldon. After three entertaining rounds and some clever counterpunching from the EEE boxer, both boxers’ arms were raised.
The first full bout of the afternoon saw EEE’s Tommy Philbrick lose out on points to 5 Star’s Johnny Sharp, with the judges concluding that the better work had come from the 5 Star puncher. Tommy, who shows great dedication in the gym, will look to bounce back over the next few months.
Rubin Nicoll got the home team back to winning ways with an accomplished performance. Slick, eye-catching combinations against Maldon’s Zach Netelenbos saw Nicoll cruise to a comfortable points victory.
Alfie Smith was up next for the home club, making his second appearance in as many weeks. Things didn’t go Alfie’s way on the day, as he was defeated by Max Nacham of Colchester ABC. Although disappointed with the result, Alfie showed great commitment and determination by getting straight back in the gym on Monday.
Next up was Theo Stevens, facing Casey Morgan, again of Colchester ABC. This time, it was the EEE boxer who took the win. Theo landed some lovely looping shots and displayed his defensive prowess to take a well-deserved victory.
Rafe Heddle kept the momentum alive for the home club, beating Ralf Edwards of Rainham over the three-round distance. Rafe is known around the club for always giving his all and his ferocious work rate, but this time it was his intelligent use of the jab, composure and measured pressure that saw him take the win.
In undoubtedly the most entertaining bout of the afternoon, EEE’s Sofia Sanchez squared off against the highly rated national champion Ciara Crittall of Kent Kings.
Sofia initially looked to be overwhelmed by her opponent’s sharp straight shots, which forced Sofia to concede a standing eight count from the referee at the end of the first round. It seemed the writing was on the wall. However, Sofia rallied herself and showed true grit in the second round, producing classy close-range combinations that forced a standing eight count of her own on the Kent boxer.
With the bout seemingly all square after two rounds, it was Sofia who edged the final round to pull off the performance of the afternoon and take home a well-deserved win.
That was a tough act to follow for EEE’s heavyweight prospect Ewen Kingsbury, who faced Lion ABC’s Jeremi Bukele. Despite Bukele receiving ringside support from former professional British heavyweight champion Jamie TKV, it was Kingsbury who came away with the points victory, displaying an elusive defensive style and sharp straight shots.
EEE would like to thank all the coaches, matchmakers, officials, support staff and, of course, the boxers who turned out to make it a well-received and successful home show.
EEE — it’s what we do!
