Colchester Table Tennis Legend Rik James will be competing at next weekends English National Veterans over 50’s and 60’s competition at Aldersley Leisure Village in Wolverhampton.

The nine times Colchester Men’s Champion has enjoyed somewhat of a renaissance this season leading the Essex County 60+ team in the Premier Division. Rik, who will be competing against a strong field of of eighty-nine players, says;

“It’s amazing to think that I’m back in the England Rankings and competing at the highest level nationally against the best players in the UK, 35 years after first competing as a Senior Man!
As Chair of the Colchester & District Table Tennis League and a Table Tennis Coach I have not been playing much competitive table tennis since Covid, but back representing Essex in the Country Championships and Colchester in British Club Leagues this season has revitalised my love of the sport that has been a big part of my life since I was 10."

Ranked no. 10 in England, this will be the ultimate test for Rik whose ‘back from the table’ style has entertained for many years has a tough draw with England no. 5 Brian Jeanes, the Welsh Number 1, is the seed in his group. James however, has the bragging rights having beaten Jeanes 11-9 in the fifth set recently when competing for Essex against Worcestershire.

First & second in the Division should be a close match Horkesley edged the League matches but if both are at full strength with the extra doubles format it’s very difficult to predict the result!

Once again the top 2 teams have made it to the Divisional final where Lawford’s no 1 Rohan Richardson-Todd only lost 2 games all season both to Tollgate players one of which Chris Gibbons is absent this evening. Jason Lloyd was the man to beat him, just 11-9 in the final end! Another Tollgate player, the unbeaten Martyn Green is missing due to injury so this could be another nail-biter with the Lawford team all using pipps!
