What happens when the view designs the room?

Victoria sits at the edge of a large garden where the ground falls away towards a wooded dell below. Rather than treating that outlook as something to look at through a conventional window, it became one of the main decisions behind the treehouse itself.

The room was given a New England-inspired octagonal form, with tall glazing across three corners and a mezzanine creating another level inside while keeping the height and woodland outlook.

It was designed as a space that could be used for sleeping, work, study or simply spending time together, but what makes Victoria particularly interesting is its relationship with the site.

Sometimes the best starting point for an additional room isn't simply “How much space do we need?”

It can be:

Where on the property would we actually want to spend our time?

If you've got a view, a wooded corner or an unusual part of a garden that deserves more than being looked at from the house, Victoria is an interesting place to start.

This project started with an apple tree.

Rather than designing a treehouse and simply finding somewhere to put it, we designed the whole thing around what was already growing in this London garden.

The result became a proper little world for the children, a timber den among the branches, with a slide, tyre swing and space for playing, reading and sleepovers.

One of the things we love about bespoke treehouses is that the garden usually tells you something about what should be built.

Sometimes it's a beautiful mature tree.

Sometimes it's a view.

Sometimes it's an awkward corner that nobody quite knows what to do with.

This one happened to start with an apple tree.

This Tree house enables over 25 people (all in the tree house at one time) to enjoy themselves in a great setting. The bottom floor can be enclosed, allowing for protection against the elements, for cooking and socialising. The middle floor can be used for sleeping and the upper floor for bird watching, sight seeing and for socialising.

This now is the best time of the year for maintaining your treehouse. Give your decking a power wash, clean your cedar shingle roof and apply an extra coat of wood preservative. Make sure that you use a preservative with some colour as this will protect the wood from harmful UV light source.
