Tuesday 1st September- The Wee Report

Last week of racing for the loch longs at Cove and it is a small window of opportunity to fit in a race before darkness falls.

A small triangular course was set for the nine starters and we were off in a light breeze towards the black buoy. Capricorn and Electra got the best starts inshore but Allegro, Dolphin and Sonara also got away well. On the beat to Mid ground, it was tricky as the tide was very strong and the wind was dying. Slioch played a blinder heading further to Gourock before tacking back and they took the lead at the windward mark from Capricorn, Electra and Sonara with the rest if the fleet rounding in quick succession. The staet of the spinnaker run against the tide was somewhat dire but progress was ultimately made as a bit of breeze filled in and there were plenty of position changes as the bots came in to finish as darkness fell. Capricorn slipped past to take the win with Slioch taking an excellent second place. Sula also recovered to take third just ahead of Allegro who were a good fourth. Dolphin was next up in fifth followed by Sonara, Grey Goose and Viva. Electra RTD

Friday 28th August

There was a great fleet of 12 loch longs on the start line on the penultimate week of club racing.

There was a bit if breeze from the north and the race team set an ambitious first beat up to Knockderry.

The inshore start was favoured but some had misjudged their timing and were slow to get going. There was also a strong tide which was either coming in or going out depending on where you were. As we proceeded up the beat there were some outrageous windshifts to contend with so the boats got very strung out and you did not have to look far to find a hole.

At Knockderry, Capricorn had worked her way into the lead from Electra whilst Sonara, slioch and Elizabeth were going well just behind in what was left of the breeze.

It was a long spinnaker leg down to the black buoy and after a short tacking duel, Capricorn held on for the win ahead of Electra.

With darkness now starting to fall, the next 8 boats were all in close contact on the last beat back to the line. It was starting to look more like a scene from Le Mans as the boats approached the line with torches flashing up at the sails. Elizabeth finished leader of the pack for third and there was a welcome return to form for Sonara taking fourth. Fifth was Ornsay followed by Dolphin, sliich and Tik Hai. Viva was an excellent ninth ahead of Allegro and Finola. Sula retired having found one of the big holes I mentioned.

Results:

1. Capricorn
2. Electra
3. Elizabeth
4. Sonara
5. Ornsay
6. Dolphin
7. Slioch

Tuesday 25th August - Crews Race

A decent easterly breeze for the second Crews race of the season and an impressive fleet of 10 boats were on the start line. This is the chance for the regular crew members to have a shot of the helm whist the regular helms remember why the enjoy sitting at the back of the boat.

Course 7 was set "the wee Diddy Triangle" in front of the club and it proved to be the perfect course as it kept things tight and it was a busy race course.

Joey on Electra managed to hold off Calum Ramsay in Capricorn to take the win whilst Ewan Turner was an excellent third in Elizabeth. Next up was Kirsty Robertson in Dolphin followed by Andy Glendinning in Sula and Keith Hall in Sonara. Slioch and Marianne were just behind in seventh and then there was a three way scrap for eighth. This was duly won by Greg on Viva who had a great night to finish ahead of Finola and Grey Goose.

Friday 21st August - The Big Report

What a beautiful evening at Cove! Ten loch longs were treated to champagne conditions tonight which was a real bonus as the day had seen light winds.

Course 01 was set and then quickly corrected to Course 02 which meant a long beat up to Knockderry from the club.

There was no clear bias on the line which was great so we had boats spread right down the line and it was clear that there was no big advantage between inshore and out.

It really was a great beat with a fantastic amount of position changes. Dolphin perhaps got a good start but after a few minutes it was clear that Sula, Electra, Capricorn and Slioch were very much in the mix. The majority of the fleet were trying to work the shore (out the tide and all that nonsense) but it was Sula and Slioch on the outside that made the early running. It was a great leg and there was a real outbreak of racing and boats were in close contact all the way across Cove Bay.

By Knockderry, it was Sula rounding first with a healthy lead ahead of Capricorn and Electra who rounded together. Dolphin and Slioch were then locked in battle just whilst Elizabeth (with a wee crew upgrade) were just behind.

It was a good run down to Cove under spinnaker and it was truly downwind as some gybes were popped in down the fleet.

Sula held firm to take a well deserved win whilst Electra just got the better of Capricorn for second. Dolphin finished well for fourth ahead of Elizabeth who I am reliably told pipped slioch - both had been going well all night.

There was then a cracking three way battle with Allegro, Grey Goose and Finola locked in battle coming around the black buoy and heading for home. On this occasion, it was team Finola who did a great job by working the shore to finish just ahead iof the Goose and Allegro. Viva was just behind to complete a tight finish across the whole fleet.
