Today we made our way across to Sutton for the 3rd Round of the Open cup with a place in the 1/4 final at stake for the winner. As the game kicked off it started a bit scrappy and the girls didn’t play their best football but regardless they took the lead from a corner when Holly picked up the loose ball and played the ball to Liv who calmly tolucked it away into the bottom corner to make it 1-0 to Sphinx. Sphinx kept threatening and had chances but didn’t extend the lead with some good defending from Sutton but Sphinx managed to get another when Martha played the ball to Annabel who turned and hit a fantastic long range effort straight over the Goalkeeper’s head to make it 2-0. Sphinx did have a penalty won by Annabel which Kieva bravely took, it was a really good penalty, calmly passed low into the corner however unluckily hit the outside of the upright and out for a goal kick.

Half time 2-0

The girls were given the instruction to pass the ball and start playing more football rather than hitting long balls, this paid dividends in the second half where they extended their lead when Kieva and Ivy played a nice one two move and Ivy calmly finished passed the gk to make it 3-0. Next was a goal of great quality, Grace drove forwards into the space then threaded a lovely weighted ball into the channel for Kieva who carried on the run and dispatched a great powerful controlled effort across the goalkeeper into the far corner to make it 4-0. Sphinx extended the lead further to make it 5-0 when Ellie put a lovely weighted ball ball into the front post and the Sutton played headed it into her own goal. Then a lovely team move resulted in a mother great goal, Annabel played the ball through to Ivy who with her first touch cushioned the ball into Liv path, she ran onto the ball and then from outside the box hit a powerful drive over the goalkeeper and under the bar to make it 6-0. Then came the final goal of the game when Gracey shot from the edge of the box, the keeper couldn’t collect it cleanly and Annabel nipped in to cause problems and Liv reacted first to smash the ball home for her hatrick and to make it 7-0. Credit to the Sutton keeper who made some great reaction saves otherwise the score would have been more.

Final score 7-0

Managers player of the match went to Kieva who was a constant menace down the left, put in some great crosses, got an assist and a goal, and worked back really well.

Assistants player went to Gracey, she was back with a bang today, great fair but physical play, her passing range really clicked with some really dangerous passes, and covered the defensive ground. She also got a great assist.

Parents player went to Puneet who put in a great shift as always, breaking up play and playing some lovely passes and also showed her adaptability at left back and went on one noticeable marauding run from left back into the box.

Captains player went to Issy T who has really pushed on this season, showed great strength battling for the ball and has grown to be really controlled on the ball looking for the right pass, and showed her adaptability playing 3 different positions.

Also well Done to Liv on getting a her hatrick.

Today we traveled to an extremely Wet Leafield. Everyone was soaked through even before warm up had finished, it was a very small tight pitch and the muddy conditions didn’t benefit the Sphinx team. It was the Leafield team who managed the conditions better and clearly used to the pitch. They managed to get a 1-0 lead from the corner in the first half the only Leafield shot of the half, Sphinx had a couple of chances but there Leafield goalkeeper was straight on them.

1-0 Leafield halftime

2nd half Leafield got a 2nd through picking up a miskick and shorting into the bottom corner. Then came a stone wall penalty when Liv was slide in on, didn’t get any ball and just took her ankles as she was about to shoot, however it wasn’t given. Leafield extended their lead further with a penalty that was very innocuous and questionable however given none the less even the Leafield manager didn’t think it was a penalty. The 4th came as Sphinx were trying to push and Leafield counter attacked.

Credit to Leafield goalkeeper who performed like prime Ederson and could have been a different story without her.

Managers player was split today between Kelsey for her battling and composure at the back, never backed down and battled for everything, and then Liv at the opposite end of the pitch did exactly the same in attack, ran everything down and battled and on another day would of had a couple of goals.

Assistants player went to Jess who managed Leafields most dangerous player fabulously and nullified her threat, a great composed display.

Parents player went to Issy who battled none stop in the middle, showed great physicality and looked to progress the ball forwards.

Captains player went to Holly who worked none stop in Midfield and had some great touches on control with the ball.

Today we made the trip over to Birmingham to face Maypole. Before the game the girls showed their respects taking part in a remembrance parade and held a 2 minutes silence prior to the game. The girls then went into the game after a big discussion about not reacting to the other team and playing their own game and look to use their passing game, which they haven’t been doing in recent weeks. They started well and did play their own game in the first half and repeated the rewards, first with Ellie breaking well and putting a fantastic low cross into the box which was met by Kieva to make it 1-0 to Sphinx. Sphinx then doubled their lead with a lovely through ball from Gracey getting Kieva in behind the defensive line and Kieva then finished well with a sumptuous lob over the out rushing goalkeeper.

Sphinx went into the halftime 2-0 having dominated the first half.

2nd half kicked off and the Sphinx girls lost their concentration which had been so good in the first half and they went back to their habits from previous weeks. Maypole grabbed an early goal with a through ball and then shortly after doubled their score to make it 2-2. Sphinx tightened up but Maypole then grabbed the third to make it 3-2 and complete the come back. Sphinx girls then kicked back into gear and started to play football again and finally got the equaliser when Ellie got her 2nd assist of the game with a through ball to Liv who powered past the defenders and got 1 on 1 with the goalkeeper and calmly finished into the bottom corner from the edge of the box making it 3-3 and that’s how the game finished with Sphinx sharing the points with Maypole. A better performance than recent weeks and something for them to build on.

Managers player went to Holly who played her best game in a Sphinx shirt since joining in the summer, she won nearly all her 50/50 battles, covered back and worked hard. She showed a good first touch and looked to play nice progressive passes which was evident as she was instrumental in setting up the 2nd goal.

Assistants player went to the whole defensive unit to this who played in the back 4 and holding midfielder roles. They worked so well in the first half and then again later in the second half. Well done Kelsey, Dearbhla, Issy, Shama, Jess, Puneet, Ann-Marie and Ellie.

Parents player went to Ellie who similar to Holly had one of her best performances in a Sphinx shirt since joining in the summer, she worked tirelessly, showed a great first touch and passing range which was rewarded with 2 assists.

Captains player went to Issy who did a great job marshalling a dangerous winger in the first half starring at Rigby back and then later in the second strengthening the central midfield area with her tenacity and calm passing.

Sphinx welcomed Leafield to the Cameron Slater arena this morning in blustery conditions. The first half started evenly and then a goal from nothing for Leafield caught the Sphinx girls off guard, there player volleyed a kick from the goalkeeper back goalwards and the wind took it into the goal.

Half time 1-0

Second half and Leafield grabbed the 2nd with a through ball, from that point the Sphinx girls seemed to drain all their confidence from most players. Leafield added further goals some which were avoidable and extended their lead with the final score finishing 5-0.

Managers player went to Liv who battled constantly and looked to cause Leafield problems all game and didn’t stop battling all game.

Assistants player went to Ellie who worked tirelessly all game, she was straight in with her tackling and looked to play clever passes.

Parents player went to Issy who worked hard in the middle and looked to spread the play when she could.

Captains player went to Shama would led by example in defence looking to get in front of the attackers or not giving them space to turn.

A tough morning against Coventry city as we hosted them at the Cameron Slater Arena this morning. Coventry did the basics better than us and looked hungrier than most of our team. The girls picked up in the second half however by that point Coventry had done the damage, lots of learning for the girls and a couple of good individual performances. The girls face a physical battle with poor Liv coming away with multiple scratch marks and stud marks down her legs but amazingly did get given any fouls, but overall those questionable decisions that didn’t go our way wouldn’t have changed the outcome.

Managers player went to Ellie who was one of the players today who’s hunger matched Coventry city’s, she was constantly battling with her opposite number and on most occasions came away successful, she worked tirelessly all game and looked to make smart passes when going forwards.

Assistants player went to Liv who was a constant thorn in the side for the Cov City defence, she was a victim to several robust challenges, sometimes after the ball had gone, and was unlucky not to be on the scoresheet.

Parents player went to Ivy who in the send half clicked into gear and worked hard up and down the right, contributing both attacking and defensively.

Captains player picked by our captain today Ellie went to Dearbhla back from a spell away from football and who looked like she had never been away from the team, strong and composed on the ball.

Today the girls travelled across the Bournville in extremely windy conditions as Storm Amy battered them as they played.

It was a battle from the off with the wind being a big contribution preventing nice football from being played. However the Sphinx girls managed to find a break through when a corner well taken by Kieva found Liv in the box and she poked home through the goalkeeper’s legs.

Halftime 1-0

Second half and more battling in midfield, Bournville were battling well and managed to get some clean possession on the edge of the box and riffled a great shot into the bottom corner giving the gk no chance making it 1-1. The Sphinx girls then upped their game and a great combination between Kieva, Liv and Annabel which led to Liv laying a great pass the Annabel who from range calmly looped the ball over the goalkeeper into the top corner making it 2-1 to Sphinx. Sphinx then managed to extend the lead further when Liv won a free kick, it was about half way into the Bournville half, Gracey stepped up and riffled it into the bottom corner to make it 3-1 and that how it finished. Bournville caused lots of problems and were a great opponent.

Full time Bournville 1-3 Sphinx in the Open cup.

Managers player went to Jess who was constantly a force at the back, she controlled the back line well, made continued interceptions and was strong in the tackle limiting Bournville to long range efforts.

Assistants player went to Issy who sat in the defensive midfielder role and was brilliant at breaking up play, but it was her great passing range and calmness that gets her the award today.

Parents player went to Ivy who was upfront and left wing and worked tirelessly all game putting in a great work ethic and was unlucky not to get a goal.

Captains player today went to Kelsey who has a dominant force alongside Jess at CB, she won her physical battle well.

Today we welcomed Coventry City Blues to the Cameron Slater Arena. It was a wet damp morning and the game started with Coventry City on the front foot showing the Sphinx girls how to make full use of their bodies, it was a lesson in physicality for the Sphinx girls who didn’t know how to deal with it at first, the cov city girls managed to take the lead getting onto a ball in behind the defence. They then managed to add a second when the reacted first to a loose ball from the corner, before adding a third before half time with a long range effort.

Half time Cov Sphinx 0 - 3 Cov City

The second half the Sphinx girls seemed to become more accustomed to the physicality and started to up there games finding ways around it, they had a couple of chance that didn’t quite find their way in and then Liv worked really hard to jump on a ball that the defence didn’t deal with, she beat a defender and the keeper passed sideways to Ivy who had a great shot stopped by the defence but Kieva was on hand to nearly finish. The phone girls kept pressing and nearly added a second which would have changed the swing of the game, however Cov managed to grab a forth on the break, and followed up with a 5th.

Final score Cov Sphinx 1 - 5 Cov City blue

Managers player went to Kelsey on her debut, she worked tirelessly in defence and made some great challenges and interceptions, considering it was her Debut she looked like she had played with the girls for a long time, composed and one the players who dealt well with the physical battle.

Assistants player went to Liv, an injury in warm up ment she started on the bench but when she came on she didn’t let the injury hamper her, she straight away unsettled the Cov defenders and was up for the physical challenge, she created the goal with her battling.

Parents player went to Ann-Marie who went in goal for the second half and had a spell at CB in the first, but particularly in the 2nd half she was great with her hands picking up any balls that came her way with ease and made some great diving saves.

Today we welcomed Kidderminster Harriers for the opening game of the season. It was a big test for the first game in the premiership after gaining promotion to the top league with our unbeaten season last year against a team who will surely be amongst the title contenders come the end of the season.

Match 1 U13 CWGFL Premiership 06/09/2025

It was Kidderminster who opened the scoring with a long ball behind the defence which was well finished. However the Sphinx girls responded well, Annabel put a fantastic cross in which was just put over the bar and there were several other near misses, however the equaliser came when Gracey played a great ball down the line to Annabel who hit a first time cross which was met at the back post by Kieva to nearly finish and make it 1-1. Next Sphinx then took the lead when puneet battled well in midfield and played a fantastic ball behind the full back which Kieva pounced onto and drew the goalkeeper then sent the ball towards the goal and Liv finished into the open goal with the defenders bearing down making it 2-1. Just before halftime Kidderminster evened the score up when Sphinx didn’t deal with the ball in defence and gifted Kidderminster the equaliser.

Half time 2-2

The second half was an even battle with both team having chances, Ann-marie had to be sharp in goal but equally Sphinx were getting forwards and testing Kidderminster but overall a lot of midfield battling. Sphinx then took the lead again when Annabel played a great ball forwards and Liv battled with several defenders and the goalkeeper, stayed calm, used her strength and slotted home into the bottom corner. There was 10 minutes left when Kidderminster managed to grab an equaliser with a well worked goal on the counter attack that was finished well. Then came the game changing moment, the referee awarded a penalty the Kidderminster that even the Kidderminster coach felt was questionable, the Kidderminster striker then took the penalty which Ann-Marie smartly saved but they finished the rebound to make it 4-3. The Sphinx girls seemed to let there heads drop after this realising that time was running out, then suddenly in the last 2 minutes Kidderminster scored 2 long range efforts to make it 6-3, an unfair scoreline that didn’t reflect the match play, a game played in great spirits by both teams, lots of learning and lots of promise for the girls and some dubious decisions given 🤣. Well done girls and thank you Kidderminster you were a credit to your club and you can see why they will be up at the top end of the table.

Managers player went to Kieva

A constant threat down the left the opposition struggled to cope with her skill and power when she ran at them, she also worked back well, she scored a well taken goal and got a fantastic assist that was nearly a 2nd for her.

Assistants player went to Issy

She had a constant battle with there RW who was clearly a dangerous player but Issy 9/10 times came out on top, we spoke to the team before the game about being first to the ball and Issy did that, she was also composed on the ball and looked to play forwards.

Parents player went to Ann Marie

She made some good diving saves from open play in full size goals, showed great hands anytime any balls came towards her in the air and was painfully unlucky with the penalty saving the initial shot and was close with the rebound.

Captains player went to Puneet

It was a day for midfield battling and Puneet sure battled having a fantastic influence on the game, always physical but fair, disrupted the oppositions play but also looked to get the ball down and play, she made one reply telling pass thag set up the 2nd goal.
