Severiano Ballesteros. ‘Seve’.

A legendary golfer, synonymous with the Ryder Cup and one of the most charismatic and influential figures the game has ever produced.

In 1976, a teenage Seve walked our fairways in the Piccadilly Medal. He finished the tournament tied in 38th place, but there were already flashes of the Seve we would all come to know.

Coventry Golf Club member Martin Ritchley was there that day, witnessing some trademark Seve shots. Here, he shares his memories.

Seve would go on to become a five-time Major Champion, winning three Open Championships and two Masters titles, becoming the first European to win the Green Jacket. He claimed a remarkable 50 European Tour victories, topped the Order of Merit six times and spent 61 weeks as World No.1.

But Seve’s influence went far beyond his statistics. His imagination, creativity and fearless style inspired generations of golfers and helped transform European golf on the world stage.

Nowhere was that influence more evident than in the Ryder Cup. Across eight appearances, Seve became a symbol of European belief and passion, forming an iconic partnership with José María Olazábal before later captaining Europe to victory at Valderrama in 1997.

Seve was more than a champion. He changed the way the game was played, watched and believed in.

Fifty years ago, that legend walked the fairways of Coventry Golf Club, and we are proud to have played a very small part in the story of his glittering career.

Next up in our ‘Golfing in the footsteps Friday’, the series where we highlight a legendary name that has graced our fairways we’d like to share a story provided by Robin Wareing about his brother Billy who found himself caddying for Vincent Tshabalala at Coventry Golf Club during the Piccadilly Medal.

Vincent started life as a mechanic but became a trailblazer in the sport as the first black man to win on the European Tour when he won the French Open in 1976 in just his second competition on Tour.

Vincent played in The Open in 1976 and 1977 with a best finish of T56.

Vincent would later go on to win the Nelson Mandela Invitational alongside Ernie Els in 2004 and then with Tim Clark in 2005.

Our first 'Golfing in the footsteps Friday' where we profile the legendary players that have graced our fairways and for our first post we are delighted to share with you a video sent to us by Sam Torrance.

Sam kindly shared a few memories from when he played our course in the Piccadilly Medal in 1976. We were called Finham Park back then and Sam won the event, which would be his first of an incredible 21 on the European Tour.

Sam went on to appear in eight Ryder Cups, sinking the winning putt in 1985 and winning four times as a player before captaining Europe to victory in 2002. Sam also had a stellar Senior career, topping the European Senior Tour Order of Merit multiple times.
