From ICG Athlete to Programme Officer: Lianne’s Full-Circle Journey! 🏃‍♀️🔄

Did you know our very own Programme Officer, Lianne, used to wear the Team Coventry race vest herself?

Lianne was lucky enough to represent the city twice in track and field, first travelling all the way to Bahrain in 2010, and then competing in Scotland the following year! 🇧🇭🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

“No one really realises how big the event is until you’re in that ICG bubble living and breathing it,” Lianne says. It’s the kind of massive achievement that feels even more special as you get older and realise, ‘Wow, I was a part of that.’ 🥹

From experiencing new cultures to making lifelong friends across the globe, the ICG journey stays with you forever.

Lianne is living proof of what Team Coventry is all about - passing the torch to the next generation! 💙🏆

What exactly is the International Children’s Games? 🌍🏅

Think of it as the Olympics, but for the younger generation!

For athletes aged 12-15, it’s the ultimate sporting stage. You don’t represent your country - you represent your home city. Team Coventry is often the only city flying the flag for England, which is a massive honour for our kids!

The Games travel all over the globe, from Europe and Asia to the Americas. We’ve taken squads to South Korea, Mexico, and Estonia. When the athletes rock up to the massive opening ceremony alongside 60 to 80 other cities from around the world, they realise just how huge this is. 🎆✨

Even Olympic medalist Chelsie Giles joined us as a coach and was totally blown away, admitting she didn’t realise the incredible scale of it all. It’s a real-deal, elite competition that gives Coventry kids an experience they’ll never forget. 🏆✈️

What is Team Coventry? 🏙️✨

Simply put, it’s a chance for kids who live and go to school in our city to do something extraordinary: wear the Coventry badge on the world stage! 🇬🇧🏅

While many of our athletes play for local clubs, Team Coventry offers them the opportunity to represent their home city at major events such as the International Children’s Games.

As “Cov kids” ourselves, there’s nothing we love more than seeing the next generation show the world what our city is made of. It’s an opportunity open to everyone, building pride that stays with them forever.

Team Coventry is about so much more than just the sport. It’s an all-access pass to life-changing experiences.

A major highlight? Having Olympic Gold Medalist Chelsie Giles join us for our 2025 trip to Tallinn last year! 🥇

Having an Olympic champion in the mix gave our athletes a front-row seat to a “champion mindset”. We hope these skills will support them as they grow into adulthood.

We chatted with Coventry City FC fans outside the Coventry Building Society Arena about the incredible promotion, and our young athletes got a taste of the match day magic!

The performance and achievements they witnessed will fuel them as they head to the International Children's Games (ICG) this summer in Taiwan.
