This shows the difference in metric as well as imperial (for us oldies) and can only be achieved by profiling. Can not be achieved by hand sharpening. Extends the life of the blades. More economical as well as giving you the advantage over others.

Just a quick heads up. It might be a good idea to take 5 minutes. Dig your skates out and have a quick look at the blades. A lot of people store their skates with the guards on. That fine for a short period of time, by the time most of you get back on the ice it is more than likely going to be a couple of months since they have seen the light of day which means there is a strong possibility of rust setting in. A tip to help prevent it is to put a bit of oil on the bottom as well as the sides. Not too much, just enough to form a thin coat. I use a special oil called easy glide but you can use 3 in 1 or cycle chain oil, WD 40 isn't a good idea as it evaporates over time. I am still providing an emergency sharpening service at the moment but without any contact. Skates can be left at my gate. I will then take them in to sharpen. I wear rubber gloves and use hand sanitizer. I will then put them back by the gate to prevent any contact. Hope this helps.

Just to let everyone know I am still sharpening skates. Still offering the same fixed price regardless of condition on a while you wait, time permitting, or drop and collect. Parking is free. Advice and the usual chat in abundance. I have plenty of hand sanitizer for yours and my peace of mind. You can also hand them over at the gate and wait in the comfort of your own car. Doesn't get much better than that. 😀👍

Well here goes. If you offer a service make sure the service you offer is fit for purpose. At the moment I am getting an awful lot of skates that don't so much need sharpening but totally rectifying. On a daily basis ranging from burnt blades. Totally flat. In even edges and a combination of all three. People are paying good money for a less than second rate service and then having to pay again to have them rectified. Luckily up to now they have found out on a training session how bad they are and managed to get them sorted before a game. It's only a matter of time before someone travels to a game just to have to sit it out due to the state of the blades. If you are not capable of doing the job properly don't do it at all. Simple as that.

Increased speed and agility. You deserve the best not second best. Get the edge over others. Get the prosharp edge. Could mean the difference between winning or losing.

You pay your money and take your chances is all I dare say at the moment.

I have been sharpening skates for around 16 years. I am a grinder by trade not a plumber or gardener etc that also sharpens skates. Over the years I have seen awful attempts at skate sharpening and still am. Poor sharpening can result in poor performance on the ice and even pains in the legs and knees not to mention premature blade / skate replacement. As you can see by the photos the results of poor sharpening. Compare the amount of unnecessary blade removal from the toe and heel and the top blade in the first photo commonly known as the banana grind, to the amount of blade that is on the bottom of the picture. The banana grind is normally the result of hand sharpening machines. Next time you get your skates sharpened don't be afraid to ask the following questions. Can you profile skates. Are you able to alter an existing profile or even put two or three different profiles on the same blades. Can they give you a glide surface or full rocker and give you a forward or reverse rake. If they answer no to one or more of these questions then ask yourself if you want to trust your skates to these people. I can do all of the above and more. I can even sharpen your blades when they are not in the skates. Some skates are extremely expensive these days and you want to get the best performance and as much life out of them as possible. Feel free to call me if you are struggling with your skates. Most problems can be easily rectified.

I'm all in favour of people buying a half decent pair of second hand skates as they can still be better than a pair of cheap unknown skates that offers little or no support or protection. Be wary of buying from the likes of eBay and gumtree. You can get some fantastic deals but you can also get some bad ones. If the pictures of them have skate guards on ask for some pictures without them so you can see the blades properly. If they won't show any then don't buy. What seems like a bargain at the time might not be such a bargain if you have to buy a new pair of blades as the ones in the skates have got to the point where they can't be sharpend much more.

As from the 1st September there will be a slight increase in cost from £4 to £5 per pair. This is the first increase for several years and only the second increase in the 16 years I have been sharpening skates. This I believe is still less than most other places. You will still a recieve a quality service at a competitive price. And as per usual, parking and advise is absolutely free. And hopefully see you in the future. 😀
