β½ THE COACH CAN SHAPE β OR DAMAGE β THE EXPERIENCE
Wengerβs message is deliberately strong because the years between 5 and 12 are fundamental in a childβs relationship with football.
At these ages, coaching should not simply be about formations, results or producing the strongest team every weekend. A coach is helping children build their relationship with the ball, the game, teammates, mistakes and competition itself.
A good youth coach creates an environment where children can play, explore, experiment and make mistakes without fear. They teach technique, but also encourage curiosity. They provide structure, but leave room for creativity. They correct players, but they do not make children afraid of being wrong.
A poor coaching environment can do the opposite.
Too much shouting. Too many instructions. Too much pressure to win. Punishment for mistakes. Children afraid to take risks. The same stronger players playing while others spend most of their time watching.
And perhaps the most dangerous outcome isn't losing matches.
It's a child losing the desire to play football.
That is why coaching children carries such responsibility. At 8 or 10 years old, we are not simply developing tomorrow's footballers β we are shaping today's relationship between a child and the game.
And Wenger's quote leaves youth football with an uncomfortable question:
Is every child who quits football really quitting the game β or are some of them quitting the environment adults created around it? πβ½
