'When a real roundhouse right lands, it breaks a nose and un-caps a geyser of blood. Wild punches that do land, as opposed to movie punches, re-sculpt faces in unpleasant ways. Fist fights are extremely dangerous and not in artful ways. Try a roundhouse haymaker against a professional and you will neither land the blow, nor remain upright through the next minute, let alone the round. The pro will beat you to the punch with a short left that he drives quickly and clinically inside your wild right. Should you retain consciousness, the professional's right cross will immediately alter that state.'

"Boxing is a kind of magic. It gives discipline to the wild, strength to the weak, & confidence to the shy." - Wladimir Klitschko

'I didn't enjoy school. I was bullied. My personality changed – I became withdrawn and very quiet where I'd been very confident before that. Boxing was my saviour, channelling my energies outside of school. But, if anything, the experience has made me a stronger person.'

'Very few people set out to be professional boxers except for emotional reasons. People take up boxing because they associate it with personal manliness. But once a boy begins boxing he may find that he has an unusual aptitude for it and gets involved in it and then he says to himself, 'Well, what else can I do?' I never urge a boy to take up boxing professionally.

I never suggest it to him even. Because if he doesn't suggest it himself he doesn't have the urge and he'll never amount to anything anyway. It is the best sport in which a man can learn personal control. He learns to control himself, to make himself do what needs to be done.'

'Without discipline, no matter how good you are, you are nothing. One day, you're going to meet a tough guy who takes your best shot. He'll keep coming because he's tough. Don't get discouraged. That's when the discipline comes in.'

'You see a kid hit the heavy bag and he looks like a million dollars. This kid's gonna be another Mike Tyson or Ray Leonard the way he looks on that bag. But when he's hitting the bag, the bag don't hit back. But when you take the same kid and put him in to spar with another kid who hits back, he's terrible.

Or you take what's known as a gym fighter. You put him in to spar in the gym where there's no pressure, where there's nobody looking at him, no paying public, no media men critering his performance, he beats the best fighters.

But when you put him in a real fight, in an arena with a crowd of five hundred or five thousand people, he folds up. His emotions overcome him. Instead of throwing that jab and moving the way he does in the gym, he doesn't do nothing. He takes the shots. He gives up. He gets knocked out.

What it comes down to is knowing how to control your emotions. How to control your fear. How to perform in a disciplined way. To have a clear mind and go out and perform.

You hear good athletes in other sports say how they have tunnel vision when they get out there. You hear it from fighters like Mike Tyson and Ray Leonard. They're saying that their mind is controlling their emotions. They're concentrating. They know exactly what to do.'

'Be very careful if you are going to use weights. Weight-training can be beneficial under the correct supervision but weight lifting can be disastrous. You rarely see a successful boxer with a heavily muscled body. You need loose, supple muscles to produce fast, powerful punches. It is all about timing rather than strength, and heavy muscles tend to restrict a boxer's mobility. By all means use weights in your training but I stress again under the supervision of somebody who knows the difference between weight-training and weight-lifting.'
