White Low Gold Cross, c.650.

The barrow that this is thought to have been found in was dug up in c.1765/66 by the farmer on whose land it was located on. There is no detail about the barrow other than a list of items that were found.

The cross is not included on the list of finds from 1766, although due to the decoration being similar to a disc brooch that was found there, Thomas Bateman thought it to have come from the same barrow. He records that it was bought from the labourer who found it by the Rev John Mason, curate of Winster.

The cross is quite small at approx 10cm in height, but it would have been a statement piece for whoever wore it - it has a hanging loop at the top suggesting it was hung around the neck. The cross is on display at Weston Park Museum in Sheffield.

White Low Gold & Garnet Disc Brooch, c.650 (approx 12cm diameter).

The barrow that this was found in was dug up in c.1765/66 by the farmer on whose land it was located on. There is no detail about the barrow other than a list of items that were found. Thomas Bateman writing in 1848 describes the disc:

‘a large circular fibula of gold, set with garnets or red glass, which has been strengthened by being riveted upon a plate of silver’

The brooch ended up in Bateman’s personal museum, the contents of which were bought by several museums around the world when it closed in the 1890’s (Bateman died in 1861). This, along with other objects, are on display at Weston Park Museum in Sheffield.

Jednym z najczęściej występujących znalezisk w naszym trench były **Roman hobnails** – żelazne gwoździki używane do mocowania podeszew rzymskich butów.

Umieszczane w podeszwie zwiększały jej trwałość, chroniły przed szybkim zużyciem, a jednocześnie poprawiały przyczepność obuwia do podłoża. Ich obecność jest charakterystycznym świadectwem codziennego życia i aktywności ludzi w okresie rzymskim.

Podczas naszych prac wykopaliskowych znaleźliśmy ich około **80 sztuk jak nie 100**. Tak duża liczba hobnails w stosunkowo niewielkim obszarze może wskazywać na **intensywny ruch ludzi i częste użytkowanie tego miejsca**.

Drobne, niepozorne przedmioty, a jednak potrafią powiedzieć bardzo wiele o tym, co działo się tutaj prawie 2000 lat temu.

Seahorse or horse?

This item is part of the Staffordshire Hoard, found by a detectorist in 2009.

The picture shows the most familiar view of what looks like a seahorse, however, the research team believe it to be a horse with flaring nostrils and a long neck (a popular motif in Anglo-Saxon art).

Thought to be a sword grip mount, the two horse heads would have faced each other when in position. The craftsmanship is exquisite, made using two different techniques - firstly repoussé, where the reverse side is rubbed or stamped with the design creating a three dimensional effect on the front. The body has then been decorated with filigree, twisted gold wire soldered onto the base plate.

To give some perspective, the object is 40mm long, 19mm high, and 0.5mm thick. One grain of rice is long than three of the filigree spirals!

Ta strona jest szczególnie ważna dla wykopalisk. Pokazuje, że nawet kiedy budynek całkowicie zniknie z powierzchni, archeolog może nadal rozpoznać jego obecność:
