THE SPACE HE’S LEFT
It makes me fold inwards.
Like the edges of my world have got smaller and I’ve somehow got stuck inside myself.
There’s this huge empty space where so much of my life used to be.
He was my dog. My little companion through everything. He was woven into every thread of my life.
And without him, the whole shape of my life feels like it’s come apart.
But then I’ll be outside and feel the air on my skin, the warmth of the sun, the first signs of autumn in the trees.
And for that moment, I remember that everything is always changing.
And sometimes I’ll hear myself laughing.
Life will grow around the space he’s left. I just don’t know what that looks like yet.
