Junsui Shotokan Karate Do offers Shotokan Karate classes in Darlington from the age of 4+

27/08/2026

All classed focussed on kihon (basics) and kata (with a little gohan kumite for the white belts). There have been some clear improvements in techniques and form in the past few weeks - keep it up!

Next week we are back to our normal class times:
Little Tigers: 5:30 - 6:15 pm
Tigers: 6:15 - 7:15
Seniors: 7:15 - 8:30

Some really good work from both our students and our cadet leaders tonight. Little Tigers worked on yoko geris and kihon kata while the Tigers worked on back stances and their grading katas. We had a short session of yoko geri kikomis against a strike shield - some strong kicks!
Seniors session was kihon, kata, more kihon and more kata :-)

Very warm evening - actually hotter outside than in, so we stayed in... Kept kihon to less demanding combinations with a focus on technique rather than strength and speed. After a break we went through the Japanese words for various techniques and then progressed onto gohan and sanbon kumite. More of the same with the adults but finished up with going through Heian Yondan.

Our first session of combined Little Tigers and Tigers and we had pretty much full attendance. Despite being a little cramped we managed to break up into groups to go through some (grade appropriate) kata. My hope is that the Little Tigers teach the Tigers how to kiai loudly.....
We had a new starter in the seniors tonight (new to us, not to karate though) who jumped straight in and put in a load of effort. Again split into groups to work on different katas.
Good evening all around 😊

A quieter Little Tigers class, but some great effort for those that made it along and they are already looking ready for their next belts! Ended the session with some ushiro geris and mawashi geris... and why not.
Tigers class spent a little bit of time on kihon and kata and then worked on mawashi geris. Ended the session with instruction on gedan juji-uke.
Seniors session broke into two groups with Ben taking the 5th kyus (and below) while I took thee rest through some 1st kyu - 2nd dan combos..... and then kata. Work to do, but a good session and hard work from all.

Next week our sessions are 6-7 pm (Little Tigers/Tigers) and 7 - 8 pm (Seniors).

Smaller than normal Little Tigers class but that allowed Sensei Ben and myself to help the students improve their stances and gohan kumite (5 step) - and improve they did :-)
The Tigers class was the usual mixture of kihon, kata and kumite but with emphasis on stepping away from an attack and completing a block - great work from all of the Tigers tonight!
Seniors session focussed mainly on kata - again, great work from all.

Having been away for a couple of weeks it was great to see that the Little Tigers have been working on basics and 5-step and the Tigers have been starting to learn new katas in my absence. So this evening the Little Tigers worked on 5-step and our higher grade Little Tigers got their fist taste of Heian Nidan while the Tigers worked on their next katas. Both groups already making really good progress.
seniors session was a little sparse, but we did some kata (and new kata for some) followed by some pad-work (mawashi geris/ura mawashi geris leading to a 3 part combo on the pads).
And two new members signing up as well!

Best of luck to everyone taking part in the grading today.

SHINE!

Far to hot and stuffy in the hall so we went outside to train - gohan, sanbon and ippon kumite in the tigers and Little Tigers classes led by senseis Ben and Shay with a little bit of kata thrown in.
Seniors very quiet, but enjoyed a mainly kata session, again, outdoors.
