Noel-Baker Academy sixth form students head to Porec Croatia on Saturday to compete in the under 18s ISF World School Championships.

The team qualified for the event after winning the 2016 under 17s English national schools title back in May last year. The competition in Croatia sees the best 32 schools teams from countries all over the world including countries such as China, Brazil, Chile and India.

Head Coach Matt Shaw commented "it's a wonderful opportunity for our guys to showcase their skills on the world stage. We are really excited about it. In addition to the basketball, there is also a cultural fair and chances to interact with all the other nations. It will be a unique experience for our lads that's for sure"

It's not the first time Noel-Baker Academy have been on the world stage, it's a biannual competition and the school qualified two years ago and participated in Limoges France. In the end they finished 25th out of 32, something they'll be hoping to better this time round. However, that won't be easy, Noel-Baker have been drawn in the same group as Serbia, Greece and Czech Republic with the top two going through to the last sixteen and the other two dropping into classification play off games.

Tzion Essel Jaji who moved from Northamptonshire to Derby to join the Noel-Baker sixth form because of the basketball academy added " I'm very excited about the opportunity and really looking forward to playing against some of the best players from around the world. This will provide me and my team mates with valuable experience to improve on the court and really challenge ourselves against different styles of basketball"

Noel-Baker Academy has a wonderful history when it comes to basketball. Having won 3 national titles in the last 5 years. Let's hope the lads can bring home a world championship medal this year.

Back-to-back Coach of the Year award for Coach Shaw, and Brian Amabilino Perez named to the West Conference All Team.

It is back to back Coach of the Year awards for Derby College/Noel Baker School’s Matt Shaw. Derby finished up with a 7-5 record to sneak into the last playoff spot in the West, finishing seventh in offensive rating and ninth in defensive rating. Shaw’s side also made a mark with their unselfish team play, finishing third in the league in assists, in part due to their accuracy from three point range where they were also third in the competition.

“I was a little surprised to receive this award again, as we have so many good coaches in our conference who do a great job developing their players,” Shaw said.

“At Derby we have a whole bunch of coaches and staff that help our guys develop on the academy and within the Trailblazers club. This award is as much a reflection of the work they do as it is mine. I’m lucky to be surrounded by so many good people and also a club that helps to build on the work we do during the week by providing so many playing opportunities at the weekend.

“We also have a set of players who work hard everyday, that makes it fun. It’s a pleasure to work with such a great group of guys and to watch them grow on and off the court.”

Derby College/Noel Baker School’s Brian Amabilino Perez (16.3ppg, 8.4rpg, 4.4apg, 2.6spg, 1.0bpg), finished seventh in efficiency, third in assists, and tenth in blocked shots whilst helping Derby to the final playoff spot in the West.

Coach Shaw added; "both Brian and Adria have been a huge part of what we have achieved this year. Not only for our Academy program, but for our Derby Trailblazers D1 squad too."
