Meet Sam Cooney 🇮🇪

16-year-old Sam Cooney from Newcastle, Co. Dublin will line up in the Europe Triathlon Junior Cup — City of Derry 2026 this Saturday.

Representing Pulse Triathlon Club and Lucan Cycling Club, Sam has been racing for two years and has already put together an impressive set of results.

He was crowned National Duathlon Champion in the 16–19 category in 2025 and has also secured two Youth Series podiums.

He describes himself as disciplined, strategic and focused.

One thing people in Derry should know?

He’s all about the carb load. 🍚🍝

Meet David McClean 🇮🇪

18-year-old David McClean from Armoy, Co. Antrim will line up in the Europe Triathlon Junior Cup — City of Derry 2026 this Saturday.

David has been racing triathlon for three years and has been coached by Ciaran McGarrity for the past two.

One of his strongest results to date came in 2025, when he finished 2nd in the Youth Series.

He describes himself as enthusiastic, supportive and competitive.

And there’s one important part of his race-day routine spectators should know about:
Post-race is always KFC and chocolate.

For David, Derry will also be a special milestone as he completes his first international race in his home country.

Meet David Coyle 🇮🇪

21-year-old David Coyle from Blackrock, Co. Louth will line up in the Europe Triathlon Cup — City of Derry 2026 this Saturday.

Now based at the University of Nottingham, David only began racing triathlon in 2025 after a strong background in competitive swimming.

Before making the switch, he reached the 2024 Olympic Trials final, finishing sixth, and has since represented the University of Nottingham as part of its BUCS Standard senior team.

He describes himself as focused, determined and calm.

Derry will mark an important milestone too, with David taking on his first international triathlon race.

And the part he’s most looking forward to?
Racing in a pack on the bike.

18-year-old Seán Cooke from Castlewarren, Kilkenny will line up in the Europe Triathlon Junior Cup — City of Derry 2026 this Saturday.

Representing Kilkenny Triathlon Club, Seán has been racing triathlon for two years and has already built up international experience, including a winning Australia campaign with the Irish tetrathlon team.

He describes himself as competitive, determined and motivated.

What should people watching in Derry know about him?

“I don’t like running.”

So naturally, he’s most looking forward to the moment before any of that begins: the start line before the swim.

ATHLETE PROFILE | ROSS KILLALEA 🇮🇪

From Mullingar to the start line in Derry.

21-year-old Ross Killalea races with Midland Tri Club and trains at DCU, and despite only racing triathlon for two years, he has already represented Ireland at the 2026 European Aquathlon Championships.

Ross describes himself as tactical, calm and focused, with a strong running background too. Earlier this year, he represented Mullingar Harriers at the European Clubs Cross Country Championships in Portugal.

Now he turns his attention to the Europe Triathlon Cup — City of Derry 2026, where he’ll line up in the Elite Senior Men’s Sprint.

And the part he’s most looking forward to?

“Definitely the run around the city.”

Tomorrow, Saturday 5 September, the City of Derry comes alive for a full day of racing, from the Triathlon National Series and Aquabike to the Europe Triathlon Junior Cup and Europe Triathlon Cup — City of Derry 2026.

Here’s your race-day timetable:

⏰ 07:00–08:00 — National Series & Aquabike race-day registration, Catalyst
📣 08:35 — National Series & Aquabike competitor briefing, Queen’s Quay

🏁 08:50 — Europe Triathlon Junior Cup Men start
🏁 09:00 — Europe Triathlon Junior Cup Women start
🏁 09:30–09:45 — Triathlon National Series & Aquabike start

🏆 10:30 — Junior Men & Women prize ceremony, Ebrington Square
🔄 12:00 — National Series transition reopens
🏆 12:45 — National Series & Aquabike prize ceremony, Ebrington Square

Then the focus turns to the elite international field.

🎤 16:00 onwards — Elite Female athlete introductions, Queen’s Quay

🇮🇪 Meet Sean McMahon.

The 20-year-old Dubliner races with the National Triathlon Centre and Piranha Triathlon Club and will line up in the Elite Men’s race at the Europe Triathlon Cup — City of Derry 2026.

Sean has been racing triathlon for four years, with one of his biggest results coming this season when he finished 3rd at the 2026 National Standard Distance Championships.

He describes himself as durable, resilient and hardworking.

Something you might not expect?

Before triathlon took centre stage, Sean was once a semi-professional Fortnite player. 🎮

This weekend, he’s particularly looking forward to one part of the Derry course: Swimming in the River Foyle.
