Desborough 5โ4 Netherton
Desborough secured their first win of the season against Netherton, coming from behind twice in a pulsating encounter that had just about everything.
The opening ten minutes were something of a chess match, with both sides cautiously feeling each other out and neither able to create a clear-cut opportunity. Desborough fashioned the first real chance after 15 minutes when Louie rose to meet a superbly floated free-kick from Ethan, forcing an excellent save from the Netherton goalkeeper.
Moments later, Seit delivered a dangerous ball across the face of goal, but Billy couldnโt quite get the vital touch as the ball teased him in front of goal.
Desborough continued to press and were desperately unlucky not to take the lead on 20 minutes. Myles saw his effort brilliantly cleared off the line by a Netherton defender, denying what looked to be a certain goal.
The pressure finally told five minutes later. A well-worked corner found Louie unmarked, and he made no mistake with a smart finish to give Desborough a deserved 1โ0 lead.
The game then settled somewhat, with Netherton searching for a way back into the contest. They found it on the half-hour mark when a superb strike from outside the area gave Lewis no chance. It was Nethertonโs first shot on target โ and it made the score 1โ1.
Things then turned dramatically. On 35 minutes, a clever through ball caught the Desborough defence on the wrong side of the offside trap, allowing Netherton to finish neatly and take a 2โ1 lead.
Almost immediately, the visitors struck again. Their winger cut inside before firing beyond Lewis, once again leaving the Desborough goalkeeper with no chance. Remarkably, Netherton had now had just three shots on target and had scored with all three. Lewis was finally able to deny them with their fourth effort, making an excellent save.
Desborough refused to go into the break quietly. Right on half-time, Seit unleashed a superb strike, putting his laces through the ball and giving the goalkeeper absolutely no chance.
Half-time: Desborough 2โ3 Netherton.
The second half continued in the same frantic fashion.
Netherton were reduced to ten men on 55 minutes following a sin-bin decision, having already had two opportunities to extend their advantage. Desborough immediately looked to exploit the extra man.
On the hour, a long throw down the line was met by Louie, who put the ball into the path of Sait. The forward finished superbly to bring Desborough level at 3โ3.
Desborough almost completed the turnaround moments later when a brilliant pass from Alfie sent Billy through on goal, beating the offside trap. It looked certain to be the fourth, but a Netherton defender somehow recovered in the nick of time to make the challenge.
At the other end, Netherton should have regained the lead, but their effort ended up in the wasteland rather than the back of the net.
The visitors continued to probe, taking advantage of some defensive uncertainty, and eventually restored their lead on 70 minutes to make it 4โ3.
The drama wasnโt over. Following a third and fourth yellow card, Desborough were awarded a penalty. Lazar stepped up and calmly sent the goalkeeper the wrong way, finding the bottom corner to restore parity at 4โ4.
With 15 minutes remaining, the match was anyoneโs to win. Netherton came agonisingly close when an effort struck the post, although an offside flag would have ruled the goal out had it found the net.
Desborough then won a free kick on the edge of the box after Oliverโs up-and-under resulted in a foul. The incident also saw the Netherton goalkeeper dismissed for a second yellow card. The resulting free kick, however, came to nothing.
With the game entering its final few minutes, Desborough finally found the decisive moment.
A superb header from Seit put Desborough in front for the first time since the opening half โ and completed an incredible hatrick for the forward.
There was still time for Netherton to threaten, but Desborough held firm to see out a breathless contest.
Full-time: Desborough 5โ4 Netherton
A hard-fought victory for Desborough, who showed real character to come from behind and claim their first win of the season.
