Match report

The guys travelled to Ryhill yesterday looking to make it 6 wins in a row knowing that realistically only a win would keep us in contention for the league title as 1st played 2nd.

5 changes were made to last weeks winning team as out went 4 of last weeks top 5 batsmen in Doug, Browny, Butty, Sutty and Rob. Into the team came Nicky, Glover, Browny, Butty and Eddie to give the team a strong bowling lineup.

Skipper Cam won the toss again and said Oui Oui as we opted to field first on an increasingly warm afternoon. The first ball of the innings rose sharply from Glover on the rock hard deck to suggest there would be something in it for batters and bowlers. The first 20 overs of the innings played out in fairly sedate fashion as Nicky and Glover toiled hard as the Ryhill openers dug in to set a platform for the team and reached 62/0 which was a little harsh on Nick especially who bowled superbly to the more aggressive Vale and largely kept him in check.

Eddie and Tony Smith entered the attack and immediately saw a reward as T picked up the increasingly frustrated Vale LBW for 38. This brought the talisman Corbet to the crease as the hosts expected to see the run rate rise considerably. However some canny bowling, field placement and improved ground fielding saw the number 3 starved of the strike for a number of overs which resulted in some agricultural strokes being offered. One too many of these strokes saw him hole out in the deep to an excellent sliding/sitting catch from Glover for 26 runs leaving the score at 111/2 with 7 overs remaining. Some more excellent bowling saw Eddie (2/25) and Tony (3/49) scoop 3 more wickets between them as the innings closed on 138/5 with opener Plant also contributing with 36. All of the bowlers performed superbly with Eddie showing superb control with his spin which was a sign of things to come.

At halfway it was difficult to know what sort of target this was likely to be as the ball offered movement in the air and off the pitch throughout the innings.

In reply Kingy and Butty opened up against the leagues top strike bowler Vale who immediately found exaggerated movement into the right handers. Both looked fairly comfortable until Butty was judged LBW to a huge inswinger for 11. What followed was a superb, gritty partnership from Kingy and Brogan of 88 runs in 22 overs which took us into 3 figures and into a hugely commanding position. Mick will be the first one to say it was not his most fluent innings of 63 but I dare say it was one his most important ones.

This left us requiring 39 runs from 11 overs with 8 wickets in hand, what then followed in the ensuing 40 minutes had to be seen to be believed!

Some kamikaze batting/Bazball efforts against the spinners saw us slip to 107/6 and then when Brogan fell for a superb innings of 32 to the returning Vale this then sparked another collapse to 128/9 as the home side and their contingent on the sidelines were c**k a hoop. Unfortunately for them they had not accounted for ex skipper Nicky Smith smoking a huge 6 over long on and then dissecting the off side field with the winning boundary to spark a pitch invasion as the victory took us top of the table by the narrowest of margins.

The game was a great advert for village cricket and a special mention must be made to the superb backing we received from our travelling fans who were a constant support throughout.

4 weeks remain in the league season as we look to finish off the season in style and with some silverware. We entertain Allerton Bywater at home next Saturday.

A big game this week as we take on table toppers Ryhill & Havercroft Cricket Club . A couple changes to today’s side sees M. Butterworth, D. Glover, E. Wilburn & N. Smith re enter the starting 11.

We wish the lads best of luck today as a win could see us top of the league. Go well lads

BENTLEY WIN!!

The lads made it 5 on the bounce yesterday with their win over Knottingley CC. Hard work and effort throughout both innings provided us with a 7 wicket win, As we chased down 128 in 22 overs. Opener M. King reaching 56 from 53 balls.

Team Selection

This week we see us play hosts to Knottingley Town Cricket Club 2nd 11. The lads are in a strong run of form at the moment and with the league getting tight at the top every game matters. Can they keep the winning going and secure the 16 points?

We find out Saturday, so why not come on down and watch the lads in the sun. Cheer every wicket, every run and celebrate a great Bentley win (we hope)

The final midweek match day is here and after successfully winning the trophy 2 weeks ago we hope the lads can finish on a win. Away at Upper Haugh Cricket Club who are potentially looking at promotion themselves if they secure a win.

We see us provide a midweek debut to our scorer Harvey Beck this week. Harvey has been scoring for both midweek and Saturday sides this year and the extra buzz and passion he provides is always a laugh. We are delighted to see if his cricketing ability matches his scoring ability.

Saturday Post Match Report

The winning form continued from the off on Saturday when captain Cammy won the toss and decided that his lads were going to have a chase, Muppala opened up from one end bowling quite tidy and taking a beauty early in his spell however it just wasn’t his day after that as he was removed from the attack after 5 overs finishing with 26 for 1, Nicky smith bowled at the other and worked hard for 10 overs picking up wickets through out and breaking up partnerships which Eggborough were building, his key break throughs really helped the Colliery deny Eggborough of making a greater score. N.Smith 39/4 -The skipper replaced Muppala and although he didn’t get a wicket himself he bowled an extremely economical 10 overs going at 2.50 an over. The end of the innings but Bentley slightly under pressure as Eggborough started to score quicker however a vital wicket from Brogan and then the Bentley chairman dismissing the Eggborough skipper stumped which just about everyone on the ground could see was out including the honest stand in square leg umpire. Eggborough Power Station finished on 160/8 from their 40 overs.

Plenty of work still needed from the Bentley lads however they were quietly confident that they had enough batting in the ranks to get the job done. M Butterworth opened the Batting with M, King a partnership of just 11 runs and Mick was dismissed (let’s just say Mick’s best work of the day would be his 24.3 over spell square leg umpiring). Muppala was then told the strap on the leg pads and join Matty at the crease and his so called test match batting which included a variety of (Bazball) shots lead Bentley to 57/2. 4 quick wickets then fell and with Eggborough on top in the game the captain needed to help his team get over the line especially as MB was Bowled on 47. Cam played some great cricket hitting sixes and fours where he could however pressure mounting due to Bentley loosing more wickets, the partnership with Family member Carl was brilliant which got Bentley to 160/9 with 5 balls left.

Scores were level, Cameron was batting well however the man on strike with 5 balls remaining in the game was the clubs no.11 specialist Tony Smith……. Dot Ball.

The next ball was bowled, Tony hits it straight to a fielder however Cam calls him through, the throw goes to the bowlers end, the bails are off and the umpires finger goes up, Eggborough Celebrating, Bentley absolutely gutted.

But then a wonderful bit of honesty and the true spirit of this wonderful game came out from the Eggborough bowler as he admitted he didn’t have the ball in his hand and Bentley had in fact won the game. A great game played in great spirit lead to Bentley picking up 15 points and moving up to 2nd in the league keeping the promotion hopes alive.

The stage is set

Today we see our inaugural Brian Loversutch 6’s tournament. We will see 5 teams compete in 5 over games to see who will come out on top and lift the trophy.

The weather is hot the bbq will be on so why not pop down and see what it is all about. Also come see the legend that is Brian Loversutch.

What a game of cricket today has been. Both sides showing true sportsmanship in a nail biting tie. An in detail match report will be out tomorrow as opener Matthew Butterworth will walk us through how he threw his 50 away.

Shout out to Eggborough Power Station Cricket Club for today’s game, a proper game played in the very spirit of cricket. Good luck next year in the York league.

MATCH DAY & TEAM SELECTION

It’s matchday, this week we see the lads travel to Eggborough CC for a battle of 3rd vs 4th. The last time we faced we saw Bentley come out on top with wickets from Ed. Wilburn, D. Glover & runs from M. Chandrasekhar.

A couple changes to last weeks side through availability however all the lads are confident to keep pushing on. With each week passing the pressure mounts on at the top of the table, the lads all know the one objective now.
