Your horse’s workload, grazing, forage and body condition can all change as we move through the seasons, but sometimes their feed stays exactly the same.

It doesn’t necessarily mean you need to feed more. Sometimes it means feeding differently.

A little review now can make winter management much easier later. 🐴

🌱 A sudden surge in fresh grass can also mean a sudden change in your horse’s diet.

For some horses, that can be enough to cause digestive upset — particularly those who are already sensitive to changes in grass or feed.

Keeping changes gradual where possible and supporting a healthy digestive system can be particularly useful at times like this.

🌱 The grass is really coming through now

But a sudden flush of fresh grass can mean a rapid change in sugar intake, which some horses cope with better than others.

If your horse is particularly sensitive to grass, now is a good time to keep an eye on grazing time, weight, droppings and any changes in behaviour.

Sometimes the grass looking fantastic isn’t quite as good news as it first appears! 👀🐴

🌱 That rain has certainly woken the grass up!

After weeks of drier weather, our fields are suddenly looking a lot greener, but that fresh flush of grass is something to keep an eye on, particularly for good-doers and horses or ponies prone to laminitis.

A few things worth thinking about 👇

🐴 Keep an eye on weight and cresty necks
🌱 Consider restricting grazing where needed
👣 Check feet regularly for heat or a stronger digital pulse
🥕 Avoid adding unnecessary calories to an already improving pasture
⚖️ Make sure a restricted diet is still providing the vitamins and minerals your horse needs

And remember, laminitis isn't only a spring problem.
