What was the moment you knew you'd caught the outdoor bug or are you still waiting for it?

For some people it's one big moment:
a summit view
a wild swim
a night under stars

A moment that flips something in your brain.

For others it builds slowly, it might be a walk here, a taster session there until one day you realise you'd rather be outside than not.

If you're still wondering when (or if) that feeling arrives that's a completely valid place to be too!

You don't need the "bug" to start. Sometimes it shows up after you've already begun, not before.

For me - I spent a lot of my childhood outdoors and joined the Army Cadets at age 12. This was probably a lovely/hate relationship with the outdoors but I soon realised I loved the type 2 fun and these experiences also REALLY helped me develop my character!

You might be wondering - how does wood processing have anything to do with supporting young people's wellbeing?

Well, here we can see a young person learning the process of batoning. This process involved using sharp tools to cut down pieces of wood into manageable sections to keep their little fire alive.

This activity involves focus and most importantly control. Linking this activity to learnings around emotional regulation and anger can be incredibly useful for opening meaningful discussions around supporting our wellbeing in this manner.

We can then begin to ask questions such as
•if we were not practicing control, what could the risk be?
•Could my actions affect other people?
•Will my actions cause a positive or negative consequence?

This activity brings this to life for them, showing them in real time, the consequences of choice and our actions and they are likely to remember it because of course... We include hot chocolates & mallows as a treat for keeping their mini fire going.

What an awesome start to the Adventure Club returning last Sunday!

Wildlife, whittling, moss, cups of tea & lots of smiles at base camp.

The group also welcomed Dylan, a new club member who completed his first club task - to light the fire for the group cuppa's! Well done Dylan!

We whittled tongs, tent pegs and mushrooms. We had some of the group discovering how stone age people may have made tools by combining stone with wood to create little hammers.

We made small woodland spirits and touched on Pictish history and as always, we connected, we chatted and we learned from one another.

This is what our club is about, light structure but room for discovery!

What a brilliant day on Saturday, welcoming 14 NHS staff for a team day filled with archery, axe throwing and plenty of friendly competition! 🏹🪓

The group came together to share some laughs, make memories and say a fond farewell to one of their team members as they move on to pastures new.

20 years ago the world lost this amazing guy !

Steve Irwin was such a special soul, with never ending enthusiasm and a massive heart for wildlife and conversation he was a star that shone bright just unfortunately not for too long.

I grew up watching his programmes and loved learning about the wildlife and obviously watching him work with the crocs.

A huge loss to the outdoor / conservation world was Steve.

Wednesday Wellbeing

Daily reminder to breathe!

It might seem simple, but when life is on top of us it can be overwhelming and we can often forget the most simplest of things.

🎯 Takeaway card: Nature Breathing

Head outdoors, find a tree or plant that's swaying in the wind or waves building and retreating and match your breathing to it's movement.

As it sways one way, breathe in, as it sways the other breathe out.

If the wind is too fast for mindful breathing then break it down - inhale for 4 sways exhale for 4.

Tools like this can help us to regulate our emotions 🌿🙌🏼
