** DRAGON WARRIOR WORDS OF WISDOM **

7. APPEAR WEAK WHEN YOU ARE STRONG...AND STRONG WHEN YOU ARE WEAK.

This is a quote from the Chinese military General, strategist and author of the Art of War. Born nearly 600 years before Jesus Christ.

When faced with an altercation, allow your assailant to believe you are weak, fearing them.

This may not be must of an act as an altercation would normally scare most people, but to get into a position to defend yourself or others, giving the assailant a false sense of security is sometimes an essential tactic.

Vice versa if the situation continues you may need to encourage the assailant to believe you are supremely confident when that is not the actual way you feel at all.

BLACK DRAGON SCOTLAND'S DRUM DOJO MONDAY COMBAT JOURNAL: 14/09/26 THE GLEN URQUHART PUBLIC HALL, DRUMNADROCHIT.

5pm LITTLE DRAGONS/DRAGON WARRIORS CLASS/ADULT CLASS

TODAY:

Dragons present: Sensei Anna, Sensei Luke, Sempai Casey, Pauline, Francesca and 3 newbies today: Duncan, Richard and Seth 😊

Warm-up: today's was conducted by Sempai Casey, thank you Casey 😊

So we started off with basics, fighting stance for the benefit of our 3 new recruits: Duncan, Richard and his Son Seth. Sempai Casey, Pauline and Francesca moved over to the BOBs to go through Combat Kata 1. Sensei Anna, Sensei Luke and myself remained with our newbies adding palm-heel and vertical punch to the fighting stance. I went over to Pauline and Francesca to add a little more detail to the first Combat Kata. This moved on to a spot of tyre kicks, bringing it all together with avoidance 😊

Techniques: Sensei Anna, Sempai Casey, Pauline, Francesca and myself moved back to the mats as Sensei Luke took Seth, Richard and Duncan over to the BOBs 😊

We continued a long the lines of avoidance, moving to the outside of an incoming right punch. Pushing the incoming right over using your left then snaking your right to place you palm under the assailant's jaw as you place your left fist in the small of the assailant's back. Lift and push back the head as you push you left fist further into the small of the assailant's back. Once the balance has gone, drop them, finish off 😊

Various adaptations of this basic technique then appeared thanks to Sensei Anna and Sempai Casey. By this point it was gone 6pm and our 3 new students and those with experience had had their mind explode with the amount of information so far being stuffed into their brains. We slowed everything down a great deal and sent our remaining time on simple wrist and lapel grab releases a long with breaking the myth you can be strangled without your body being up against an immovable object, such as a wall 😊
.."CIRCLE"

Cracking class and great to see so many new faces. I hope you all enjoy your first lesson with us and we hope to see you next Monday...on the mat.

Let's Stay Safe.

FIGHTBACK SELF-DEFENCE:
SEPTEMBER TRAINING BLOG.

Our second class held at the Raigmore Hospital Recreation Hall. Again low numbers, but those that did attend and those who kindly let us know they couldn't attend, thank you.

First today after warming up we had a little reminder of the basic strikes we covered last month. Ears, face, stomach and neck, strikes to all these areas followed by knee strikes x3 and takedown.

Continuing with the subject of knees, we moved onto the knee throw. This is a prime example of a technique where allowing your assailant to believe you are submissive to their agenda is your first action. I will say only that on Facebook. For further details, attend our classes!

At this point we introduced avoidance. When an assistant goes to strike you, you are no longer there. This is something we will be revisiting regularly.

Moving on. Ground defence, if unfortunately your assailant manages to take you to the ground and proceeds to try and keep you there, these techniques are designed to help you return to your feet, if correctly executed. We covered both face up and down.

We had a request last month to demonstrate a couple of defences against the handgun. These only work if your assailant is "giving you the weapon". This meaning the gun is closer to you than the assailant, if its the other way around and they only want to rob you, let them.

That's our second class, a big "Thank you" to the ladies who came to train today and again my thanks to our team: Anna, Luke and Casey. See you next time.

Next class: 11th October.

Shared from Mark Watson but couldn’t agree more:-

Being an instructor doesn't mean I have to be on my feet coaching every second of every class.

There is a difference between teaching and demonstrating. Teaching is about passing on knowledge, understanding, timing, application and experience. Demonstrating is simply one of the tools we use to help someone understand what is being taught.

Sometimes I teach. Sometimes I walk the floor and observe. Sometimes I sit back and watch. I can correct a student, explain a movement, adjust their technique or have another instructor demonstrate something without having to physically perform everything myself.

As I get older, the physical aspect of teaching changes. I am still present, still involved and still responsible for what happens on the mat, but I have to recognise that my body isn't the same as it was years ago.

I can still deliver and demonstrate power, speed and technique. That hasn't disappeared. But I'm smart enough to know when and where to use it.

Certain techniques, particularly those requiring explosive movement, high kicks or repeated impact, need to be considered. The same applies to sparring. Yes, I can still keep up with younger students when I choose to, but I have nothing to prove. Maybe they do.

There was a time when a simple spinning hook kick to the head was something I could demonstrate without a second thought. As my body ages, my head kicks may become more focused on attacking the body and knees.

That's not because I don't want to do it. It's because I don't need to.

Your body has limits, and with age you learn to respect them. It can achieve what is necessary without constantly demanding that it prove what is possible.

That's really what teaching is about. Think about a child learning to walk. You don't pick them up and carry them everywhere. You encourage them, support them, guide them and stay close enough to catch them when they stumble. But eventually, you have to let go.

You can't walk for them.

You give them the tools, confidence and guidance to take those first steps, and then they have to find their own balance and learn to walk themselves.

Martial arts is no different.

My job isn't to constantly do everything for you. My job is to teach you, guide you, correct you when necessary and give you the confidence to eventually do it for yourself.

Saturate with knowledge.

So never assume that if you see me sitting down and observing, I'm being lazy or disengaged. My body may be taking a moment, but my head is still very much in the game.

Sometimes the best teaching I can give is simply to step back, watch and let you take those steps.

Age doesn't diminish experience. It teaches you where to spend your energy.

"A hammer shapes the metal, but the fire keeps it strong."

6. AVOIDANCE: IF AN ASSISTANT THROWS A PUNCH AT YOU...DON'T BE THERE!

Self explanatory really, but not so easy in practice. At BDS we train avoidance with counters as part of our syllabus.

Believe it or not, this can be difficult to learn as it involves not only moving out of the way of an attack, but also timing.

Go too early and your assailant could adapt and still strike you, go too late and...well, need I say more.
