CLYFA A Division Challenge Cup

Heston welcomed Yett Farm to Maryfield for the final group game of the CLYFA A Division Challenge Cup, with the boys looking to respond after a few recent performances where they perhaps hadn’t been at their best.

The aim was to get back to our identity and the style of football that has brought the team so much success previously — and from the very first whistle, the signs were extremely positive.

Heston came flying out the traps, putting the visitors under early pressure and creating problems down the right-hand side. Freddie was causing all sorts of issues for the Yett Farm full-back, and that pressure soon resulted in the opening goal.

Freddie beat his man before playing a clever through ball into Harris’ run, with Harris making no mistake and firing home to make it 1–0.

Freddie then doubled the lead shortly afterwards after being brought down inside the box. He stepped up confidently and calmly fired the resulting penalty straight down the middle to make it 2–0.

The third goal came after more excellent work from Freddie, who drove in from the right and fired across the goalkeeper. The keeper did brilliantly to make the initial save, but Brody was on hand to react quickest and fire home the rebound.

Heston’s quick combinations around the box were a real feature of the first half, with some fantastic attacking football on display. It was brilliant to see the boys back playing with the confidence, movement and intensity that we know they are capable of.

Just before the break, Freddie grabbed his second of the game, firing home to make it Heston 4–0 Yett Farm at half-time.

The message at the break was simple: more of the same and don’t let the standards drop.

The second half started in much the same fashion, with Heston again putting the visitors under early pressure. The intensity did begin to drop slightly as the boys perhaps became comfortable with the four-goal advantage, but despite that, Heston continued to limit Yett Farm to very few chances.

The boys eventually lifted the tempo again, with Rocco picking the ball up in midfield and playing Brody through on goal. Brody showed great composure to finish past the goalkeeper and grab his second of the afternoon.

Heston added a sixth shortly afterwards when Freddie was awarded another penalty. Once again, he showed great composure, calmly slotting the ball down the middle for his hat-trick.

Yett Farm managed to grab a late consolation, but the damage had already been done, with the final score finishing:

A much-improved performance from the boys today, showing fantastic work rate all over the park, slick attacking play and some football that was an absolute joy to watch at times.

It was a brilliant way to finish the group games and, most importantly, a performance that showed the boys getting back to the identity and standards we know they can produce.

⭐ MAN OF THE MATCH – ROCCO

Today’s Man of the Match was Rocco, although it was an extremely tough decision.

Harris and Freddie both had outstanding games, Jack C and Jack G were absolute rocks at the back, Brody looked back to his best, and Lewis covered every blade of grass.

However, Rocco maintained an incredibly high standard throughout the entire game, showing excellent quality both on and off the ball. A fantastic all-round performance from the wee man.

🏆 PLAYER OF THE MONTH – LEWIS 🏆

Since joining us, Lewis has had a really positive impact on the squad. He gives 110% in everything he does, both in training and on match days in his central defensive midfield role

He’s an incredible ball winner, covers huge distances across the pitch, breaks up opposition play and helps control the tempo of the game. His work rate and attitude have been outstanding- a selfless player who would run through a brick wall for his teammates. 👏

The boy is not only a warrior, but a great person to have around the club. 💪⚽

Heston Rovers 2–2 Evolution

CLYFA A Division Challenge Cup

Heston Rovers travelled up the road this morning to face Evolution in their third game of the CLYFA A Division Challenge Cup, looking to bounce back from last week’s disappointing result.

The coaches freshened things up with the return of Jack C following a short injury lay-off, slotting into centre-back, while James came in at left-back. Freddie moved back to his natural right-wing position, with Harris taking up a more attacking midfield role.

Heston took a little time to settle into the game, but gradually began to play forward with more intent. Half-chances started to come, although some poor decision-making in the final third made it difficult for Heston to turn their pressure into goals.

At the other end, the Heston defence did a good job of frustrating Evolution and limiting their opportunities, but the boys just couldn’t find the breakthrough themselves.

Half-time: Evolution 0–0 Heston Rovers

The second half followed a similar pattern, with Evolution creating very little while Heston continued to push for an opening.

Against the run of play, Evolution took the lead after an uncharacteristic mistake from Blair saw a loose pass intercepted and finished well.

Blair quickly redeemed himself, producing a top-class save, tipping a powerful strike onto the bar when it looked destined for the back of the net.

Heston continued to push for an equaliser and eventually got their reward. A lovely through ball led to an effort being saved and pushed wide, with Brody reacting quickest to fire home from a tight angle.

1–1!

Evolution then regained the lead with a looping free-kick which dropped perfectly into the corner, just out of the goalkeeper’s reach.

Things became even more difficult for Heston when an unfortunate collision resulted in Jett receiving a straight red card, leaving the boys with around 20 minutes to play with ten men.

It would have been easy for the boys to fold at that point, but instead they rolled their sleeves up, showed tremendous character and continued to push for an equaliser.

Their determination was eventually rewarded with around ten minutes remaining.

Heston won a corner on the left, which was whipped into the box and fell perfectly to Daniel, who made no mistake with a composed finish.

2–2!

With very little time remaining, Heston looked the more likely side to sn**ch a winner, but it wasn’t to be.

With the Challenge Cup group stage format awarding a bonus point for the penalty shootout, the game went to penalties.

Evolution eventually took the bonus point, winning the shootout 4–3.

A huge well done to all the boys who showed the courage to step up and take a penalty, and another special mention to Blair, who produced two outstanding saves from the spot.

There were certainly frustrating moments throughout the game, particularly with our decision-making in the final third, and that’s something the boys will continue to work on.

However, the work rate, commitment and desire to turn the game around — especially after going down to ten men — was extremely pleasing to see.

On 29th August 2026, some of our coaches will be joining an incredible group of people as we take on a 24-hour charity challenge

Together, we’ll be aiming to:
🏋️ Lift a combined 1,500,000kg
🏃 Run a combined 234 miles

We’re doing this to raise money for Prostate Scotland following the heartbreaking diagnosis of our friend Grant, who has recently been diagnosed with stage 4 prostate cancer that has aggressively spread to his bones.

The 234-mile run will also be completed in memory of David Parrish, who sadly lost his life while attempting to break the unassisted record on the Cape Wrath Trail.

The challenge begins at 6:00am on Saturday 29th August and finishes at 6:00am on Sunday 30th August. For the full 24 hours, our team will be lifting and running continuously as we push ourselves to reach our goal.

Heston Rovers 1–4 Milton Rovers

Heston Rovers welcomed Milton Rovers to St Joe’s this morning for our second match of the season, looking to build on last week’s excellent comeback cup victory and continue our positive start.

We knew we would have to be at our best against a very well-coached Milton Rovers side, and from the first whistle the visitors showed exactly why. Milton started brightly, putting Heston under pressure and making the opening 20 minutes difficult for the boys as they struggled to match the intensity of the visitors.
Milton turned their early pressure into goals, taking a 2–0 lead. The score could have been even greater had it not been for some outstanding goalkeeping from Blair, who produced a brilliant top corner save from a free kick before also stopping Milton attackers in two one-on-one situations.

As the half progressed, Heston began to find their rhythm and started putting some pressure of their own on the Milton defence. Freddie came close with a free kick from the edge of the box, shooting narrowly wide.
Then, moments later, Brody delivered an excellent cross into the middle, finding Harris, who swivelled neatly inside the box before firing the ball into the net to give Heston a much-needed lift and get us back into the game.

The second half began with Heston still looking a little scrappy and disjointed in possession. An early ball into the box saw Brody rise between the centre-backs to nod the ball into Henry’s path, with Henry then calmly knocking it past the keeper. Unfortunately, the celebrations were short-lived as the referee ruled the goal offside in a very tight decision.

Milton continued to threaten down the right-hand side, and their winger was brought down inside the box as he cut in, resulting in a penalty. Milton stepped up and converted from the spot to restore their two-goal advantage. Blair did brilliantly to get a hand to the effort but was unable to keep it out.

Milton then added a fourth after a foul out on the wing gave them the opportunity to deliver a dangerous free kick into the box. The resulting cross was met by a Milton player, who headed home to make it 4–1.
The closing stages became scrappy as both teams battled hard. Heston never stopped fighting and continued to look for a way back into the game, while Milton defended their advantage and saw the result through to the final whistle.

Credit to the boys for continuing to battle right until the end in a game where we simply didn’t reach our usual standard of football. Some of that was down to Milton, who produced a very strong display and made life difficult for us throughout.

There are lessons to take from today, and the boys will learn from the experience as we look to bounce back strongly in next week’s fixture. 💪⚽

A superb performance from BK between the sticks today. Blair produced save after save to keep Heston in the game, especially during Milton’s strongest spells, while his distribution was also excellent throughout.
