Greystone Rovers 2011’s are back on the road this Sunday as we make the short trip along the A75 to Galabank Stadium to face Annan Athletic in Matchday 3 of our U17’s league campaign.

The boys head into the game with plenty of confidence following Sunday’s excellent 5-3 victory away to Nithsdale Wanderers.

Greystone produced a strong first-half performance in Sanquhar, creating a number of good opportunities and deservedly going into the interval with a 2-1 lead.

The opening stages of the second half provided a real test of the boys’ character. Nithsdale came out strongly and managed to turn the game around, moving into a 3-2 lead early in the second half.

That could easily have knocked the confidence out of the group, but the response from the Greystone boys was excellent. They regrouped, worked their way back into the game and began to take control again, eventually scoring three unanswered goals to turn a 3-2 deficit into an impressive 5-3 victor.

More important than the result itself was the character and togetherness shown by the whole squad. Going behind after leading at half-time could have changed the momentum completely, but the boys kept working for one another and found a way back into the game.

This weekend, however, promises another significant challenge.

Annan Athletic come into the fixture on the back of an emphatic 11-0 victory over Threave Rovers. That scoreline certainly catches the eye and gives an indication of the attacking threat Annan can pose.

Greystone will therefore know that they need to be switched on from the opening whistle, defend well as a team and make the most of their opportunities when they come.

These are exactly the type of games we wanted when making the step up into U17 football this season. Playing strong sides, dealing with difficult periods in games and learning how to compete together will only help this young group continue to develop.

Sunday gives the boys another opportunity to build on the determination shown at Nithsdale. We know Annan will provide a stern test, but we'll travel to Galabank ready to compete, play our football and work hard for one another.

🔴⚪ FULL TIME | NITHSDALE WANDERERS 3–5 GREYSTONE ROVERS 2011’s ⚪🔴

A brilliant second-half response from the Greystone boys today as they came from 3–2 down to run out 5–3 winners against Nithsdale Wanderers. 👏⚽

Greystone were very much on top throughout the first half, creating a number of good chances and restricting Nithsdale largely to their own half. The breakthrough eventually came midway through the half when some good attacking play saw Moaz Elsaghier deliver the ball into the area for Liam Hunter, who was there to finish and give Greystone a deserved lead Moaz then followed that up and got Greystone’s 2nd.
Right on the stroke of half-time, Nithsdale were awarded what looked a very dubious penalty. From our point of view, it appeared the initial foul may actually have gone the other way, but the decision stood and Nithsdale converted to send the teams in to halftime at 1–2.

The second half was a completely different story early on. Nithsdale came flying out, putting the Greystone defence under real pressure and creating a number of chances. Within the opening stages of the half, the home side had turned the game around and suddenly Greystone found themselves 3–2 behind.

But what followed showed the character, togetherness and determination within this group. 💪🔴⚪

The boys refused to let their heads drop, worked their way back into the game and gradually began to take control again. Greystone scored three unanswered goals, turning a 3–2 deficit into an excellent 5–3 victory.

The pick of the goals was undoubtedly Greystone's fourth — a fantastic strike from Struan Bell — before Struan added another from the penalty spot to complete the scoring.

A really positive result, but perhaps even more pleasing was the reaction when the boys found themselves two goals behind. Nobody gave up, nobody stopped working, and they found a way back into the game together.

After a disappointing opening result against St Cuthbert Wanderers, the boys are back in action this Sunday as we make the trip to Sanquhar to face Nithsdale Wanderers.

Last weekend wasn’t the start to the league campaign we had hoped for however we move quickly on to the second league fixture of the campaign. Again we know Sunday will be another tough game and Nithsdale will provide a strong test on their own park following a good opening day victory over Gretna 2011’s, but the focus for us is very much on ourselves, competing for every ball, working for one another, being brave in possession and reacting positively when things don’t go our way.

One result doesn’t define a season. What matters is how you respond to it.

Time to get back out there and show that response. 💪🔴⚪️

🔴⚪️ **FULL TIME | GREYSTONE ROVERS 2011’s 1–4 ST CUTHBERT WANDERERS** ⚪️🔴

A disappointing start to the league season for the Greystone boys today, with St Cuthbert Wanderers running out 4–1 winners in a game where the final scoreline perhaps didn’t fully reflect how competitive the match was.

It was a frantic opening, with both sides struggling initially to get a foot on the ball and settle into any real rhythm. Saints struck first following a corner in what was a difficult moment for Greystone. The ball came back off the post amid a crowded six-yard box and, despite Greystone feeling there had been a foul in the build-up and some uncertainty over whether the ball had crossed the line, the referee awarded the goal. Sometimes those decisions go your way and sometimes they don’t, and we had to get on with the game.

Greystone responded positively and began to push Saints back. Some good work down the left created an opening inside the box and, when the clearance dropped to **Zak** on the edge of the area, he showed great composure to calmly slot the ball home and make it 1–1.

From there the game settled, with Greystone arguably creating the better opportunities before half-time. Saints’ goalkeeper produced an excellent save from Olly to keep the scores level going into the break.

The second half followed a similar pattern early on. Greystone created a number of very good opportunities, but the Saints goalkeeper was in excellent form, producing two or three important saves when it looked like we might take the lead.

As the half progressed, Saints began to have more influence on the game and regained the lead from a set piece to make it 2–1. Greystone continued to push and never stopped competing, but chasing the game inevitably created spaces and a couple of mistakes were punished, allowing Saints to add two further goals and give the final scoreline a more comfortable appearance.

**FT: Greystone 1–4 St Cuthbert Wanderers**

Credit to St Cuthbert Wanderers, who took their opportunities when they came and defended well when under pressure. On another day, particularly if a couple of our chances had gone in when the game was finely balanced, the outcome could have looked very different.

There were plenty of positives for our boys. We knew stepping into an U17 league would bring a significant challenge, particularly against dual-band squads containing older players, but physically the boys competed extremely well across the park and showed that they are more than capable of competing at this level.

We are still a very new squad, with several boys only having played a handful of games together, and that understanding will continue to develop.

Heads up, boys. The result is disappointing, but the performance gives us plenty to build on.
