Three group classes, 21 days. The number that matters isn't the three. It's the gap in between.

People sometimes read 21 days as a clock ticking. It isn't. Three classes across three weeks is roughly one a week, and that's the rhythm I'd want for anyone starting. Once a week, kept, tends to do more for your body than three times a week for a fortnight and then nothing at all.

Most of us have done the second version at least once. It isn't a character flaw. It's just a pace nobody could hold.

There's a practical bit too. Come back while the first class is still fresh and you'll spend the second one feeling the work rather than working out where your hands go. That's usually when it starts to make sense.

So: three group classes for £45, valid 21 days, any group class we run, reformer included. If the reformer's new to you, start with Foundation. It runs on Monday and Tuesday mornings, Tuesday evening and Thursday late morning.

Whenever you're ready, we're here.

The hardest part isn't the class. It's choosing which one to book.

I understand. Reformer Foundation, Reformer Control, Studio Circuits, Mat. From the outside the names don't tell you much, and nobody wants to turn up to the wrong one and spend the hour feeling like the odd one out.

So here's the honest answer: you don't have to get it right first time. The intro offer is three group classes for £45, valid for 21 days, and it covers any group class we run, reformer included. It's there so you can try a couple of rooms and find the one that feels like yours.

If it helps:
Reformer new to you? Foundation assumes nothing and teaches the machine step by step.
Looking for a more individual programme? Studio Circuits is on the ground floor, and everyone works through their own programme.
Rather start without thinking about any equipment? There's Mat.

And if you'd like to bring someone, a friend, your sister, your mum, that's often the easiest way through the door.

After the three, most people move onto a class pack. That's a decision for later.

Whenever you're ready, we're here.

Ten minutes early sounds like a rule. It's actually the most useful part of the hour.

That's when we hear about the knee that grumbles on the stairs, or the shoulder that's been sore since you slept on it badly. And it's when your reformer gets set up around you, rather than you fitting yourself to whatever the last person left behind.

A few practical things, since nobody likes arriving unsure.

Grip socks are needed upstairs, because the carriage moves and bare feet slide on it. If you haven't got any, we keep plain ones at the studio.

The Tower studio is up around eighteen steps, turning two corners. If stairs are difficult on a given day, just tell us and we'll talk you through a ground-floor option instead.

Then we begin, with your machine already set and your instructor already knowing about that knee.

Arrive exactly as you are. Ten minutes early, if you can manage it.

On a reformer, the heavier spring is often the easier one.

This catches almost everyone out. In a gym, heavier means harder — that's the rule we all arrive with. It just doesn’t ring true for the reformer.

The springs aren't only resistance. Depending on what you're doing, they're also support. Lying on your back pressing the carriage away, a heavier spring gives you something solid to work against. Take the load off and the carriage starts to wander, and now your hips, your ribs and your feet all have to agree on where they're going.

That's the moment the work actually shows up. Not in the effort, in the control.

So if you're ever moved onto a lighter spring in class, it isn't a demotion. It usually means you're ready for the harder version.

Half past seven on a Saturday morning, and Brook Street is still asleep.

The studio lights go on, the kettle goes on, and for about ten minutes it's just the sound of equipment being set. Then the door goes, and whoever's first in gets the good spot by the window.

I'll be honest — this is my favourite class of the week. Nobody arriving at 7.30 on a Saturday is there to perform. They're there because it's the one hour that nothing else can claim. Work can't have it. Nobody needs collecting from it. It's done before most of the day has started asking anything of you.

They come in quiet and leave chatty. That's usually how you know it worked.

If Saturday mornings are the only time that's genuinely yours, it's a good hour to spend.

Nobody in a postnatal class minds if you stop halfway through to feed the baby.

I think this is the thing that keeps most women away — not the exercise, the logistics. The fear of being the one whose baby cries. The fear of having to leave. The fear of turning up and getting it wrong in front of people who have it together.

So, plainly, here's what Friday mornings look like. Babies come. They lie on the mat next to you, or they're fed, or they're walked around the room by whoever's nearest. Nobody watches. Half the room is running on four hours' sleep and everyone knows it.

The movement itself starts lower than you'd expect. Breathing, ribs, hips, the deep work that has to come back before anything else is worth doing. It builds from there, at your pace, and if your pace this week is slower than last week, that's information, not a setback.

You don't need to be recovered to come. Coming is part of recovering.

Fridays, 10.30am. Babies welcome, in every sense.

Three classes for £45. Enough to find out whether this is for you, and nothing more than that.

Here's the thinking behind that number. One class tells you almost nothing. You spend most of it working out where your feet go and whether you've made a terrible mistake. By the second, you know the room. By the third, you can feel the difference between bracing and working, which is probably the thing you came to learn in the first place.

Three is the smallest honest number.

It covers the new reformer classes upstairs as well as the classes downstairs, so you can try whichever feels right, or one of each.

It's valid for twenty-one days, which is long enough to fit around a normal week rather than a perfect one.

Whenever you're ready, we're here.

Six. That's the most people you'll ever share the reformer studio with.

Upstairs at Nutrio there are six reformers, and that's the whole class. We could have squeezed in more. We didn't, because six is the number where your instructor can still see all of you.

From the doorway, a reformer can look like a lot. Straps, springs, a carriage that slides. But what it's really there to do is adjust to you. The springs can take some of the load off a movement so you can find it, or add a little more so you can work it. A strap brings the reach closer. Nothing about the machine needs your body to be a certain shape before you start.

With six in the room, someone's making those changes for you quietly, before you've had to put your hand up and ask.

And if you'd rather things moved at a steadier pace, Reformer | Control is built for exactly that. It's still hard work. The transitions are just unhurried.

Whenever you're ready, we're here.

The first reformer classes ran upstairs on Monday morning.

If you came along to the open day on Sunday, thank you.

A reformer can look like a lot from the doorway. Once the springs are set for you and someone's shown you where your feet go, it's simply a class. The same attention to detail you'd get downstairs, the same considered exercise choice, the same flow of movement, just on new equipment.

There's room in most of the reformer classes this week and next, in the mornings and on Tuesday evenings. It's a lovely time to come along, while the room is still new for everyone.

Have you ever tried a reformer, or is it one of those things you've always quietly wondered about?
