AVW new bouldering setting, zones & grade system explained.
We have 9 zones, and as usual, a new zone will be reset each week:
* Big Prow (Zone 1)
* South Wall (Zones 2 & 3)
* East Island (Zone 4)
* West Island (Zones 5 & 6)
* Stepped Roof (Zone 7)
* North Wall (Zones 8 & 9)
We have switched to a tagged V-grade system and moved away from coloured circuits to freshen up our setting and give everyone the chance to climb on all hold types across the grades.
Bronze tags mark the start holds and identify the grade (V0–V9+).
Please brush holds before and after climbing for improved friction.
Also, keep chalk use to a minimum and please clean up any spills.
We have new signs up in the centre to help explain the new, simpler system, but feel free to come and speak to staff if you need any help.
Let us know what you think.
Cheers 👍🏼

🚨 BIG NEWS! 🚨
Our downstairs bouldering area has been open for over 10 years, and it’s finally time for a refresh! 🎉
Over the next few weeks we’ll be:
🟢 Installing brand-new matting
🎨 Giving the area a fresh coat of paint
🧗♂️ Completing a full circuit reset across all colours
Work starts this week and is due to be completed by mid-July.
Don’t worry — our upstairs bouldering areas will remain fully open, and we’ll be adding plenty of new problems both on and off circuit to keep things fresh while the work takes place. 💪
If you’re a member, now could be the perfect time to book onto one of our FREE ropes courses and start your rope climbing journey. 🧗
👀 Bonus challenge: Do you know who the climber is in the first photo, taken in our upstairs bouldering area back in 2003?
📸 The second photo shows the downstairs area before AVW, when the building was still an auctioneer’s warehouse!
We’re excited to keep investing in and improving Avertical World, and we can’t wait to share more updates with you soon.
Thanks for your patience and support while we make these changes. We know the finished result will be worth the wait! ❤️
