It took the D Team till the last game of the season to win a match in 25/26, but they've kicked off early this time round, as the new look side scored a 3-1 win over Castlehill E. Led by new captain Jonathan Kemp, with son Magnus, new recruit Alfie, and stalwart Andrew, two wins and two draws clinched a fine start for what looks a pretty strong squad.

15 years of hurt, or at least a bit of embarrassment, ended on Monday when we finally won back the Bobby Gow Memorial Trophy we hadn't won outright since 2011, with a thrilling 10½-7½ win over our title-holder buds from Castlehill Chess Club Dundee.

An 18 board match is extraordinary in these times, and the regular high numbers for the Dundee leg reflect the great support from Castlehill, whose members always show up for it. We're working on returning the favour!

We had been assured we'd at least be returning the musical background Castlehill provided with the Abba tribute last year, but the promised Scottish/Bagpipe accompaniment from the choir practice failed to materialise. Can't have everything.

In the match, our new brood certainly made a difference, as the 3½ points gathered by the eight debutants proved vital. Traditionally we win well on the top boards and lose pretty much everything after that! We continued with the former, gaining an unbeaten 5½ from the top seven boards, but this time we held up over the rest of the field. It came down to us needing just a half from the last three games, then we promptly lost! But a battling Sven clinched the draw from Alasdair, leaving David to polish the result with a win in the last game.

Having really failed to even make a contest of it in recent years, we were glad to get back to the Ryder-Cup style excitement of olden days, and obviously delighted to regain the trophy. A great meeting of the friendly rival neighbours as ever. Certainly Bobby would be highly chuffed of the sporting battles held in his name 🤗

That time of the season again. The start of it basically. Our annual curtain-raising, everyone-in clash with our buds at Castlehill Chess Club Dundee, the Bobby Gow Memorial Cup.

Bobby was a much-loved character and member of both clubs, who passed away much too young. We hold this pre-season match in his memory, though I dare say not many current players will have known him. Our early dominance in the match is a faded memory now, as we haven't won outright since 2011. The score stands at 12-6 to Castlehill, with 2 matches drawn. This year, we come of age with the 21st meeting.

The format is simple. Everyone who turns up plays! Whether in the actual match or a graded friendly if there's a member overlap, if you're there, you WILL get a gradable game, a boost for those players still ungraded. As all losers say, it's the taking part that counts, not the winning (?!), and the match has long been a great meet-up between the friendliest rivals in chess.

Always a great occasion, this year it's at our gaff, Monday 5th October at the club. Please try to arrive by 7.15 latest, as the pairings take a while to sort. As we say, everyone there gets a game. No matter what your standard of play. Last time at our club we had 25 boards! Castlehill always support the event so well.

So please come along, members of both clubs, for the greatest Dundee Derby of them all.

Cheers Bobby 🤗

ps please note that for this Monday the junior club will be held upstairs.

Ansh continues on his highly successful way. Not content with all he's done at DCC, he invaded our friends at Castlehill Chess Club Dundee to win their Friendly Allegro with 5/5

Then he comes back to Dundee to do the same, this time with Scottish Champion Ed Spencer trailing, in the tournament, and in their individual game.

Then today he finishes 15th/64 in the mega-strong UK Open Blitz Qualifier in Edinburgh, with 9/15. 2nd in his Category C. Showing his ability over all time controls!

The Junior membership continues impressively, throughout the holidays, which even brought some record attendances. Swelled on Monday by some more new and keen arrivals.

Incidentally, the Kemps, Magnus and Jonathan may be pleased and surprised to learn that they finished joint top of the latest Friendly Allegro, despite only playing three of the four rounds! Their 3/3 could not be beaten by those who remained, and they take it on tie-break!

We said goodbye to Jan last night, likely for some time as he and his partner head off to new jobs and new lives in China.

A stalwart of both city clubs, and of course Dundee City for several years now, and a great friend and companion at the clubs and the many tournaments around Scotland.

He'll be much missed, but of course we wish him well. All the best me old China 🤗
