Durham University Men's Football Club. Proud members of BUCS Prem North and Wearside League Div 1

19/12/2022

The 1s currently sit bottom of the Northern BUCS prem after a difficult start to the season. Injury’s have played a big role in availability and made Head coach Adam Furness life difficult when trying to select his best starting XI. The results so far have been mixed, a few narrow defeat’s to Loughborough and Newcastle took a lot of of the lads after giving everything in both games and were on the end of some questionable decisions. However, the performances have been improving game by game. The performances against Nottingham Trent have been indicator’s of the potential the squad has when all players are back fit. Our home victory Vs Trent was a real statement of how our lads apply themselves to the style of of play head coach Adam Furness implements at the University.
There’s been plenty of positives and negatives during the first half the season; 3 big games after Christmas all at home will define the lads season.

We caught up with Jack Camarda to give us his thoughts on the year so far:
“It’s been a tricky start to the season for the lads, however I’m confident we can get the job done going into the remaining 3 games at home. With the games being at Maiden castle this should give us the advantage over the teams we are playing. It will suite our style of play and I’m confident we will get the results we need. There’s been plenty of positives during this term, the squad is in a transition period - we lost a lot of players last year and we are rebuilding this year. Everyone has applied themselves brilliantly and showed we are capable of beating anyone is this league. Our final 3 games are massive, especially our charity game Vs Newcastle. It would be great to see as many people down supporting us in these games to help us get the points we need.”

Christmas sees the 2s sat 2nd in Northern Tier 3 with 4 wins from 4 after what has been a strong term. The lads have gelled quickly and have played some quality stuff at times. Unfortunately their cup run came to an end after defeat on penalties to Leeds University but there is much positivity around the squad heading into the new year as they bid to secure the league title. Winger Joe Bryant had the following to say about the season so far:
“It’s been a great to start to the season and we’re pleased with both our position in the league and the progress we’ve made along the way. Going out of the cup was obviously disappointing but that’s football. Everyone will tell you that the atmosphere around the squad is top tier and we’re looking forward to kicking on and achieving our goals next term.”

The Christmas break sees the 3s sat 5th in Northern Tier 3, with 3 points and a game in hand on those around them. The lads have had some great performances including a scintillating 10-0 win on the road against Leeds Trinity and a good victory in the cup at home to Huddersfield. Unfortunately, their cup run is now over but there is much to look forward to in the 2nd half of the season, with the opportunity to kick on and push up the league table. Manager Chris Maiello had the following to say:
“The 3s team has had a huge intake of new members of the club, which is important to settle in their new university life and integrated in our club culture and environment as quickly as possible. This term has seen more positives than negatives as the team performances were getting better each week resulting with our last BUCS game before our break resulted with the biggest win since the 3s was formed. That was a great moment for the lads gelling as a team and showing that exciting things are about to come after the new year.”

At this point in time we sit 6th in the Wearside League, 17 games into our inaugural season in non-league. The move into Saturday football has been great for the lads and they have acquitted themselves excellently - particular highlights include the last minute 4-3 win against Durham Corinthians and the 9-1 defeat of South Moor. Durham United secretary Alex Zimaras had the following to say:
“Coming into the new season I was full of excitement that DUAFC would be partnering with Durham United to offer a Saturday outlet for the lads. That excitement has continued throughout the year - I think we have had a really good start and the buy in from the students, coaches and university staff has been excellent. Although we might have hoped to have better results and be higher up in the league, on reflection I would say we are exactly where we should expect to be. A new challenge that has provided the boys with a chance to get physically and mentally tougher which will show more and more on pitch as the years go by.”
