End of Season Summary

Our final game of the season ended in a disappointing 6-0 defeat to league runners up New Brancepeth. Even with the bare 11, we were absolutely awful first half and went in 5-0 down - no complaints. Second half we were a bit better and should’ve scored about three or four but as has been the case in recent weeks, we failed to take our chances and New Brancepeth ended up making it 6.

Overall, we’ve had an enjoyable season and finished comfortably mid-table in 7th position. This is made more impressive by the fact that most weeks we have 9 or 10 starting players well into their 30s and must have the oldest average-aged team in the league! There’s been some very strong teams in our league once again this year but the lads have held their own for the best part of the season and the spirit and crack has been good throughout. Thanks to all the lads who’ve helped me out this year, whether that be washing strips, sticking up nets, sweeping changing rooms or even marking the pitch, you’ve made my job easier - but I look forward to retiring from management and handing over the reins to someone else 😀

Next week is our presentation night in the cricket club 👍🏽🍺 Good luck to the retiring butcher Aaron White - anyone in need of some boots and shinnies check the bins round New Brancepeth

Sacriston 1-2 Ouston Cherry Tree

A beautiful day for football saw us host Ouston Cherry Tree in our final home game of the season. With little to report in terms of chances first half, it was Ouston who opened the scoring after a well-worked move led to their midfielder unleashing a rocket into the back of the net. The equaliser came for us about ten minutes into the second half when Kieron Moralee whipped a cross in which met the head of David Winter who nodded home. Both teams had some good moments to find the winner but it was Ouston who grabbed all three points with a header in the dying minutes. Despite the result, it was a good game of football and credit to Ouston for being one of the only teams to actually help tidy the changing rooms afterwards👍🏽

Man of the match could’ve went to anyone this morning for a very spirited display despite being down to the bare bones so we did a random man of the match generator in the club…Congrats to Davey Wardle who was the lucky man out the hat - cracking performance in the centre of the park on his first game in over 6 months!

Spennymoor Volti 2-0 Sacriston

A tough result to take falling to a 2-0 defeat away at Spennymoor Volti which is always a tricky place to go. Without sounding bitter, we really should have scored three or four goals tonight with some of the golden chances we created, hitting the post twice and having about three cleared off the line - and I think it came as no surprise to anyone when Spennymoor then managed to score a late goal with about ten minutes to go. We pushed hard for the equaliser but couldn’t find it and Spennymoor managed to grab the second right at the death. Overall, a disappointing result however the effort and commitment was there and like mentioned above, on another night we’d have won comfortably. Credit to Spennymoor though, who looked threatening from set plays and are always a tough opponent to play against. Man of the match was a genuine toss up between Ben Sanderson, Chris Mordue and Simon Moralee for strong performances in midfield, particularly in the second half, and it was Simmy who won the coin flip 😀
(As I don’t have a picture of Simmy since he’s not on FB, here’s a clip of our captain Chris from his TV modelling days)

Sacriston 1-4 Drunken Duck

Only a couple of days from our victory against Witton, tonight we came up against a very strong, top of the league, Drunken Duck side and unfortunately came away empty handed. The Duck were always going to have more possession but we limited them to very little in the opening period until their central midfielder curled a beauty in the top corner from outside the box to put them 1-0 up. Again we were holding our own until the referee wrongly awarded a dive as a penalty which was tucked away to give the Duck a 2-0 lead. We pulled a goal back just before the half when Adam Wilson’s deflected freekick lofted in the air and Kieron Moralee was on hand to nod home to get us back in the game and get him off the dreaded donuts for the season. The second half continued in the same fashion with Duck having lots of the ball but creating very little until the turning point of the match happened. The Duck managed to get in behind our defence and a goal-bound shot was spectacularly saved on the line - unfortunately for us it was by right-back Callum Adamson and he got his marching orders and the Duck scored the resulting penalty to put them 3-1 ahead. The Duck got their fourth and final goal of the game against the ten men of Sacriston and that’s how the game ended. Overall, a spirited performance from our lads with some excellent defensive performances across the pitch but Kieron Moralee was once again pick of the bunch for another outstanding performance at left back, centre back and right back 😀 Shout out to big Michael Finch making his first appearance of the season who was outstanding at the heart of the defence as well 💪
