A threadbare Sacriston squad made the lengthy Tuesday night trip down to Bishop Middleham, where a poor start left them with too much to do in this one.

They were caught cold by the home side, who deservedly scored twice in the opening 15 minutes. Sacriston did improve as the half went on and David Winter pulled a goal back, turning and finishing smartly to make it 2-1 at the break.

The second half started more evenly but it was Middleham who struck again, this time on the counter, to make it 3-1. Sacriston hit back with 15 minutes to go - Sonni Armstrong with a powerful header, giving the away side hope.

But as Sacriston pushed for an equaliser, they were always going to leave space and Middleham were able to capitalise on a mix up at the back to put the game to bed. A disappointing result - the effort was there, but Sacriston were never really able to recover from their poor start.

Man of the match went to Simon Moralee for a solid display, out of position, at left back.

Sacriston will hope to welcome back a few players for Sunday's visit of Spennymoor in the cup.

Sacriston's tough start to the season continued with a cup trip to one of the league favourites in Kelloe.

Once again, hard work was required from everyone as the well-drilled home side pressed from the off. Sacriston proved difficult to break down however, and were able to play some decent football of their own when they did get possession. Kelloe created a couple of openings in a competitive first half, but couldn't find a goal and the teams went in 0-0 at the break.

The home side came out flying in the second half though and quickly opened the scoring following a slick move down their right. A second and third came shortly after as the game looked to be getting away from Sacriston.

The boys dug deep however and pulled a goal back on the hour, Luke Wilson nodding in from an Adam Wilson free kick.

Kelloe continued to be a threat going forward though and, with Sacriston having to make a number of changes through injuries, were able to take advantage and add two more goals on the counter.

Despite trailing 5-1, Sacriston's work rate and attitude never dropped and, incredibly, they fought back with 3 goals in the final 10 minutes. First, Luke Wilson smashed in his second from the penalty spot, before Adam Wilson stabbed home from close range following a scramble in the box. With 3 minutes to go, it was Luke again, completing his hat trick with a curling effort beyond the Kelloe goalkeeper.

Sacriston pushed for an equaliser, but Kelloe held firm to take their place in the next round.

Despite the defeat, it was another excellent, battling display from a depleted Sacriston squad. The team are dealing with a lot of injuries and players having to play out of position. But the effort and commitment from everyone has been first class.

Fair play to Kelloe as well. A very good footballing side who will take some beating in Division 2 this season.

Man of the match today went to Ben Washbourne. Worked his socks off as a lone striker for 60 minutes in his first game of the season, then dropped back to produce a superb 30 minute cameo at Centre Back.

Next up for Sacriston, a Tuesday night trip to Bishop Middleham in the league.

Sacriston opened up their league season with a spirited performance in difficult circumstances this evening. Missing a number of players through absence and injury, they more than held their own against a strong Chilton Club FC.

The away side pressed from the off and Sacriston had to defend under pressure for large parts of the first half, but a makeshift back line stood firm.

They were eventually breached mid way through the half by a well taken goal, though the Sacriston players felt there was a more than a hint of offside about it.

Chilton added a second right on half time, a smart finish following a good move, and went in 2-0 up at the break.

Sacriston heads didn't drop however and the team kept up the same attitude and energy throughout a more even second half. They continued to defend well and began to grow more into the game as an attacking force.

With just 5 minutes remaining, the home side pulled a goal back - Chris Mordue heading in from a lovely Davey Wardle cross. Sacriston pressed for an equaliser, but it wasn't to be. A defeat to start the league season, but a performance the lads can take a lot of heart from. The attitude and application from everyone was first class and will stand the club in good stead as the season goes on.

Man of the match went to Harry for an outstanding performance at Centre Back.

Sunday sees the lads in cup action again, travelling to Kelloe FC.

Sacriston kicked off the new season with a battling performance, but ultimately disappointing result, at home to Crook Town Miners.

In what was a scrappy game, the hosts played the better football in the first half and deservedly took the lead when Ryan Grayson latched on to a superb Chris Mordue pass and fired home. Neither keeper was really tested for the remainder of the half and Sacriston looked comfortable going into the break a goal to the good.

The second half began in much the same vein and, with neither side really able to get on top and legs tiring, the game became more of a stop-start affair.

On the hour mark, Sacriston came close to making it 2-0, with debutant Jamie Bliss just unable to connect with a Mordue cut back. The visitors took full advantage, as a powerful cross from the left flashed through the six yard box, hitting the post and deflecting in off defender Ewan Cairns for an unfortunate own goal.

The game was even from there on as both sides struggled to create clear cut chances. Sacriston thought they had gotten themselves back in front with 10 minutes to go, however Ben Sanderson's thumping strike rattled the upright and stayed out.

With penalties looming, it was the away side who snatched a late victory as a long ball was not dealt with and their striker pounced to stab home.

A late defeat and a tough one to take, as Sacriston never really looked in danger of losing the match. The boys will look to bounce back on Tuesday as they kick off their league campaign, at home to a strong Chilton side.

Man of the match today went to Ryan Grayson for an all round solid game, taking his goal excellently and even doing an admirable job filling in as an emergency left back late on.

Great to see a both Harry Pears and Jamie Bliss make their debuts today. Some much needed youth in the club setup!

Narrow 4-3 defeat to Sticky Wicket in our penultimate friendly of the season last night. Good luck to them for the season, they’re a very good team so we can get a lot out of that game. We now move on to Chilton for our final pre-season friendly on Sunday.
