The number on the bar is only half of it.

Someone gets under a squat they could only manage twice at the end of the last block, and this time the third rep comes up. On paper the weight hasn't changed. In reality they're stronger than they were eight weeks ago, and they know it.

Someone else has had a rough couple of months, with work all over the place and not much sleep. They still match what they did last time. That counts too. Holding on to your strength through a hard spell is harder than it sounds.

None of this matters much if it stays in the gym, and it doesn't. It shows up in carrying the bags in from the car in one go, in helping a mate move a sofa, and in not having to think twice about any of it.

Most people who start training can't really tell whether it's working.

That's not because it isn't. Strength comes on slowly, a bit at a time, and while you're in the middle of it every session just feels like a session. You don't notice the bar getting lighter. You only notice that it still feels heavy.

So every eight weeks we stop and check. The last week of each training block is a test week. Everyone works up to the most they can lift for three reps on the main lifts. It gives people something solid to look at, instead of a vague sense that things are probably going alright.

The next one starts next week, and for a lot of people it'll be the first proper look at what the last two months have done.

Pressing overhead used to leave Anna sore.

She's been working back from a shoulder injury, and from a bad cut to her forearm that left her with nerve problems.

This week she pressed 25kg over her head, and the next day her shoulder was fine.

If you're training around an old injury, that's the win worth chasing. Not a bigger number. Being able to do it without paying for it afterwards.

Weekly Wins 💪

None of these happened in one good week. They came from turning up when it was easy and when it wasn't.

Proud of every one of them.

When I started out as a personal trainer, I thought everyone wanted to lift weights.

Back then, strength training was still a fight. Women were being told that lifting would make them bulky, and everything else on offer was high intensity fat loss classes. So I pushed hard the other way. Get strong. Look after your joints and your bones. Get your steps in and forget the cardio.

The problem was I'd swapped one rigid approach for another. Not everyone wants to train the same way.

These days everyone knows strength training matters, so I stopped trying to force people down one path and built a session where they can pick their own instead.

Everyone starts with the main lift of the day. A squat, a bench, a deadlift. From there the session splits. Build is more strength work, so you finish having trained your whole body. Burn is a circuit, an AMRAP, something that gets you working hard and breathing heavy.

Then we added Burn45 on top of that, three sessions a week for anyone who wants more of the conditioning side.

Same gym, same coaching, two different paths through it.

I was wrong to think everyone wanted the same thing. It took me a while to build something that didn't ask them to.

Most people who get in touch with me ask about 1-1 personal training.

It makes sense. You want someone who knows what they're doing to keep an eye on you.

But after 13 years of running EK Fitness, the people still training with us years later are nearly always the ones in our group sessions.

You still get coached properly. The difference is the people around you. They get to know you, they notice when you're not there, and that's what keeps you coming back.

If you've been thinking about 1-1, a group session might be the better place to start.

Yes, it costs more than a budget gym.

You’re not paying for access to a building. You’re paying for forty-five minutes that are properly coached, with a plan behind every session and people around you who turn up for the same reason you do.

Two or three sessions a week. No waiting on kit. No guessing what to do next.

The gym you actually keep going to is never the expensive one.

Member of the Month: Colette 🏆

Our August 2026 member of the month is Colette.

Honestly, Colette is a dream to coach. She’s in every morning at 5:30am with a smile on her face, ready to work — and over the last few months that work has really shown. She’s been chasing extra weight on the bar, extra reps, never shying away from a challenge, and she’s loved getting chin ups into her programming these last few weeks 💪

What really stood out though was over the summer, when she started bringing her son along to a few sessions — helping him build his confidence around the gym and showing him exactly what hard work looks like 🙂

Thanks for being part of what we do here, Colette. You make this place better 🎉

Last Saturday, someone came in undecided — legs still sore from Thursday, but wanting to train anyway. Ten minutes later she was mid-set on an upper body Strong45, no plan needed beyond showing up and listening to her own body.

That’s the point of Strong45, now running alongside Jabs n Abs every Saturday at 9am. Upper or lower, decided on the day, built around whatever the rest of your week’s already asked of you.

If Saturday’s a morning your schedule can actually give you, this is worth using it for. Members, get yourself booked in through the app. If you’re not training with us yet and this sounds like something you’d want in your week, send us a message and we’ll sort you out.

Walk into The Training Room and there’s space to actually move — 10 metres of sled track down the middle, racks either side.

Squat racks, cable pulleys, GHD, leg press, sled, dumbbells to 30kg, kettlebells, med balls — and it’s coaches only, no members. No fighting through a busy commercial gym floor, no music blaring over you while you’re trying to coach a client through a set.

Just you, your client, and quiet enough to actually hear each other.

A couple of spaces still open. Message to see it in person.
