Retford United U9s Make It Two Out of Two!
Retford United Under 9s continued their impressive start to life in the Sunday Doncaster & District Football League producing another emphatic scoreline, this time in front of their home supporters.
Buoyed by last week's winning debut, the boys arrived full of confidence and wasted little time in stamping their authority on the game. There was an early warning sign when the visitors thought they had taken the lead, only for their effort to be ruled out. Goalkeeper Vince then showed great bravery on two occasions, diving at the feet of onrushing attackers to keep the scores level.
The breakthrough soon arrived, and it came courtesy of midfield maestro Louie S. Quick thinking from a kick-in caught the opposition napping as Louie found himself unmarked. Taking a touch to create an angle, he unleashed a stunning strike that flew into the top corner via the inside of the post to give Retford the lead.
If the home supporters thought they had seen the goal of the day, Louie had other ideas. Less than five minutes later, he found himself in almost the exact same position and produced an almost identical finish, firing the ball into the same top corner with pinpoint precision to double Retford's advantage.
With the lead established, Retford settled into their rhythm. Energetic midfielder Louie C was relentless in breaking up play, using his pace and tenacity to close down every passing lane. At the back, the ever-reliable Harley dealt comfortably with any rare attacking threat, continuing to build a reputation as Retford's very own Virgil van Dijk.
The second quarter saw a slight tactical reshuffle, but Retford's dominance continued. Aaron and Ethan provided a solid spine to the team, while Luan and Josh remained alert for any loose balls and opportunities to create danger.
It was Luan who grabbed the next goal. After a strong clearance upfield from Aaron, Luan drove forward with purpose, taking on defenders before smashing the ball beyond the goalkeeper to extend the lead.
From there, the floodgates opened. With roll-on, roll-off substitutions keeping the energy levels high, Retford continued to attack and were rewarded with first goals for the club from both Josh and Ethan.
Josh, continuing to develop in the heart of midfield, collected the ball before unleashing a powerful left-footed strike that arrowed into the bottom corner, leaving the goalkeeper with no chance.
Adam then maintained his excellent goalscoring form, finding the net for the second consecutive game with a superb individual effort. The tricky winger showed great determination and composure to add his name to the scoresheet once again.
Ethan completed the scoring in style. Timing his run perfectly into the box, he met an inviting cross and thundered the ball into the back of the net to cap off another outstanding team performance and put the finishing touches on a convincing victory.
A fantastic display from every player, with the Parents' Player of the Match award going to Louie S for his brilliant brace and commanding midfield performance.
