A damp and muggy morning greeted the 13 strong squad to face Woodlands Women.

Buoyed by an opening day victory hopes were high that Retford could get something from the game.

A solid first 20 mins saw Laila be the main Retford threat. Playing a lone role, Retford failed to get bodies high up on the big pitch to support her, shots straight at the stand
-in keeper came to nothing.

Just on the 20min mark another great ball through. Laila gets in behind and clipped falling to the ground. Possibly a card, but the ref deems it accidental. A Megan free kick, could she repeat last week….straight to the keeper arms.

Woodlands pressure nearly paid off last few mins of the half. An on-rushing Issy in the Retford goal. Great positioning and the attacker slid it wide.

Half time 0-0. Fantastic defending from Amelia, Immy, Zuzzie and Colette. A solid back 4 helped by Issy in goal.

The second half started as the first ended. Stalemate.

That was until the 50min mark. All Retford’s hard work undone, some tiring legs. Attacks down the right causing problems and the attacker allows to slot home.

Injuries to Zuzzie and a collision, the second in a week with Issy in goal didn’t help.

1-0 soon became 2-0, another attack down the right and a looping shot beats Issy in the Retford’s goal.

Despite being down, Retford were not out. Corners, shots, lots of committed tackles by the midfield but a lack of a final finish.

Woodlands added a third and the game petered out.

Player of the match Molly getting injured optimised the commitment everyone gave.

Another gutsy team effort where the better quality team won on the day.

Game day 2, and Retford sit in mid table 5th from 10 teams.

Retford FC Under 12 Girls headed to Dunscroft for the first game of the new season with just eight players available. That meant taking on a full team of nine—but nobody told the Retford girls they were supposed to be at a disadvantage!

From the first whistle, Retford came flying out of the blocks and took control.

Lottie and Nixie caused chaos up front, constantly putting Dunscroft under pressure and looking to find Betty in dangerous areas.

The opening goal came courtesy of Nixie, who was in the right place at exactly the right time. After the keeper couldn’t keep hold of the ball, Nixie pounced, took her shot and smashed it into the back of the net. Clinical!

At the back, Alana and Dotty were an absolute brick wall, giving Aggy one of those quieter days in goal—although she was ready whenever she was needed.

Thea seemed to have borrowed an extra pair of legs, covering the whole pitch in midfield, while Daisy was snapping into tackles and winning the ball back like it belonged to her.

The second goal was all Lottie. She spotted her chance, charged up the pitch and fired it home. Game faces on, celebrations out!

Picking one Player of the Match was impossible after such a brilliant all-round display, so it went to the entire team. Eight players, nine opponents, two goals and one massive performance. What a way to start the season—well done, girls!

Hyde Park Knights U10 v Retford FC U10 Green

It was an early, wet start to the day as Retford FC Green U10 headed out for another match, ready to put their training into practice.

Hyde Park Knights came out strong from the first whistle, while Retford took a little time to settle into the game. Ire was first to test the Hyde Park goalkeeper with a shot on goal, but their keeper wasn’t letting anything past him. George and Jenson were working hard at the back, putting in some great defending and helping to keep Hyde Park’s attacks under control.

As the game went on, Retford’s energy really started to pick up. Orlando won the ball and got a shot away, but once again the Hyde Park keeper was there to make the save. David was alert and ready, though, spotting his opportunity when the keeper couldn’t hold onto the ball and getting the ball in the back of the net.

Alfie, Ishe and Matias continued to work hard, making great runs and finding space to give Retford options going forward. Their efforts paid off when David produced a fantastic cross into Orlando, who made no mistake and perfectly placed the ball into the back of the net.

Ire continued to show great determination, going on some big runs with the ball and taking on the Hyde Park defenders. Unfortunately, he couldn’t quite find a way through.

And we can’t forget our goalkeeper, Gio! After being out of action in goal due to an injured hand, it was fantastic to see him back between the posts. Gio was ready and waiting to pull off some great saves.

Overall, a really positive performance from Retford. They took a little while to get going, but once the energy and confidence picked up, the boys showed some fantastic passing, movement, defending and determination.

Sprotbrough U14s 1–1 Retford FC U14s

A new season, a new challenge and an excellent start for Retford FC.

After missing the opening weekend due to West End Terriers playing their wildcard, Retford FC U14s finally got their new season underway with a tough away fixture at Sprotborough.

This season brings a significant step up for the boys. It’s the move to 11-a-side football, while also taking on the challenge of playing a year above but if the opening game was anything to go by, they are more than ready to compete.

There was also a change on the touchline and in colours. Paul and Lee took their places in the dugout, Tom had the flag as linesman, and Retford were back in the traditional blue kit, replacing last season’s orange.

With Charlie, Jenson and Harley unavailable, Retford lined up with Jacko in goal; Teddy, Will, Ronnie and Flynn in defence; Sam, Oscar, Zach and Hugo across midfield; and Louis and Marcus leading the attack.

From the opening whistle it was clear this was going to be a competitive, physical game. Sprotborough were a strong side, but Retford matched them superbly. The boys battled for every ball, used their bodies intelligently and showed they weren’t going to be intimidated by the step up in age or physicality.

The breakthrough came in the 26th minute.

Hugo delivered a delightful diagonal free kick into that horrible corridor of uncertainty between goalkeeper and defence. The keeper had to decide whether to come and collect or anticipate a touch from one of the onrushing Retford players.

Enter Ronnie.

He managed to get what can only be described as a few strands of hair onto the ball but that was all it needed! The slightest touch helped it on its way into the far corner and gave Retford a deserved 1–0 lead.

Sprotborough responded and continued to put Retford under pressure, but the defensive performance was excellent.

Jacko produced some spectacular saves, earning praise from the opposition coaches after the game, while Ronnie was outstanding at the heart of the defence. Calm in possession, strong in the challenge and composed under pressure, he put in a superb performance.

Alongside him, Will was excellent, winning important headers and making a number of well-timed interceptions. Teddy and Flynn worked relentlessly throughout, giving everything on either side of the defence.

In midfield, Zach was in full flow, controlling areas of the pitch and showing the battling mentality that has become such a big part of his game. Oscar showed some really promising moments driving forward with the ball while also getting stuck into the physical side of the contest.

Marcus caused problems with some excellent runs into the channels, carrying the ball forward confidently and linking particularly well with Hugo. Hugo looked to release him with balls in behind while also helping connect the midfield and attack.

Sam and Louis both put in plenty of graft for the team, and Retford very nearly snatched all three points right at the death when Louis had a chance to win it.

It wasn’t to be, and the game finished 1–1 but there was plenty for Retford to take from their first outing of the season.

Playing 11-a-side, stepping up against older opposition and coming up against a strong, physical team was always going to present a new challenge. The way the boys competed, defended and worked for one another was a hugely encouraging sign of what could be ahead.

A really competitive game of football and an excellent start to the new season.

Match report -
Armthorpe Markham Main U13 5–0 Retford U13 Blues

A tough afternoon for Retford U13 Blues against a strong Armthorpe side, with the scoreline harsh on the effort shown by the boys.

Armthorpe started well with plenty of possession, but Will A was excellent in goal, making several good saves to keep Retford in the game.

Retford created chances too, with Henry and Eddie combining for an early opportunity, while James battled tirelessly up front. Luca delivered a good corner which Henry headed just wide, before Xavi produced a fantastic cross from the left that flew across the face of goal.

On 10 minutes, Armthorpe took the lead after a long ball down the middle saw their player reach it just before Will, with the ball eventually trickling over the line.

Retford continued to compete, with Luca having a long-range effort saved before a superb outside-of-the-boot pass released Brodie, whose cross was just behind the incoming Retford players.

Half-time: Armthorpe 1–0 Retford

Retford started the second half positively, with Luca again putting Brodie through, but his cross was cleared. Another good cross from Brodie was saved by the Armthorpe keeper.

Armthorpe increased the pressure and scored twice more, on 41 and 46 minutes, to make it 3–0.

Xavi continued to battle hard down the left, while Seb worked tirelessly in midfield, winning free kicks and competing for every ball.

Two further goals on 55 and 56 minutes made it 5–0, but Retford never stopped fighting. Some excellent late play from Evan, Eddie and James saw them break down the right and get a cross into the box.

Full-time: Armthorpe 5–0 Retford

A difficult result, and the boys will feel unlucky to have conceded five without getting on the scoresheet. However, the effort and attitude were there throughout, with the team battling until the final whistle.
