Beachy Head World Championship Penny Farthing Hill Climb Time Trail

I wonder if any local businesses have a trade bike that they'd like to enter into a 1 mile race? This race took place in 1912 at Devonshire Park. Maybe one to resurrect in 2027 as part of the celebration of 150 years of cycling in Eastbourne.

The Beachy Head World Championship Penny Farthing Hill Climb Time Trial - Visit Eastbourne The world's only hill climb for penny farthings.

Preparations are going well for this year's hill climb. We are looking to hold a meeting at some time in February for anyone who's interested in helping out. We need more volunteers this year as last year's event was much larger than expected and received nationwide press and television coverage. If you are interested in helping out, please DM us.

As well as a penny farthing hill climb, this year we'll be running a normal time trial at 8:00am. Entries open on 1st May via the CTT website.

Eastbourne Bicycle Club 1877

As the Beachy Head World Championship Penny Farthing Hill Climb Time Trail has developed over the last few years, we have decided to form a club and affiliated to CTT. Along with running the hill climb the club constitution also sets out our aim to increase awareness of Eastbourne's cycling history. To this end, we have set up a FB page and will be posting articles and images relating to Eastbourne's cycling past. The club is called the Eastbourne Bicycle Club 1877, a revival of Eastbourne's first bicycle club, The Eastbourne Bicycle Club formed in 1877 by Caleb Luther Adams. Image approx 1886

A £10 ULEZ charge would be a significant cost to the organiser, competitors and marshals of our event. With our extremely limited budget this would make the event unviable. Let's hope that this idea has now been permanently scrapped!!

❌ 𝗕𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵𝘆 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗥𝗼𝗮𝗱 𝘁𝗼𝗹𝗹? 𝗡𝗼 𝘄𝗮𝘆🙅🏾

This weekend, I’ve learned about a draft document proposing a road toll system for the Beachy Head area.

𝗜’𝘃𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝗱𝗲 𝗶𝘁 𝗰𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝘁𝗼 𝗘𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗯𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗲 𝗕𝗼𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗹 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗜 𝗱𝗼 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁.

We definitely need to tackle air pollution and anti-social driving around Beachy Head but this is not the way - there are loads of other things we should instead push for to address these issues (traffic calming measures, speed cameras, improving public transport, increasing electric car charging points across town - to name a few).

EBC have responded to local concerns today with the following:

“Eastbourne Borough Council is set to launch a public consultation on how to improve air quality in our area, after high levels of air pollution have been recorded across our town.

“While research has been undertaken into ideas to hear local people’s views ... as part of this process, EBC has no plans to create a ULEZ-style zone in Beachy Head and this is not a proposal that has council support.”

💡To get ready for the council’s consultation beyond this, what ideas do you think could help tackle anti-social driving on Beachy Head (there’s lots of speeding by boy racers up there) and what could be done to improve air quality?
