Traditional Matsubayashi-ryu (shorin-ryu) karate

Photos from Matsubayashi-ryu Karate England's post 03/02/2024

Congratulations to three students from the Eastbourne dojo who successfully passed their promotion tests this evening.

Tuhin joined the dojo around 7 years ago, having originally studied Shotokan karate as a student at University "ahem" some years ago! This evening he tested for 1st Dan and did a great job.

Mykel has been a student at our dojo since the age of around 8 years old and has continued his training, almost without breaks, for the past 25 years. Mykel and his wife Meg now live in Ipswich and he has just become the third official WMKA dojo in England, having received his certification from Okinawa headquarters. Mykel did an excellent job this evening, achieving 4th Dan.

Finally, Inge started her karate journey about 27 years ago, when Sally and I were still brown belts, and has continued her journey ever since, week in week out. During that time she has travelled to Okinawa as well as many karate events throughout Europe. She has been, and continues to be, one of the stalwarts of the dojo and it is a better place for her. Inge also graded successfully for promotion to 4th Dan.

Thank you to ALL the students at our small but dedicated dojo who help out and work hard every class - may we continue for many years to come 🎉

Connectivity of a Community - 15/04/2023

A wonderfully descriptive and well-written summary from Tony Roberts, Sensei (USA) following his recent training trip to Okinawa.

If you've ever wondered what it is like to be a member of the World Matsubayashi-ryu Karate-do Association, along with some of the benefits and obligations that it entails, this sums it up most eloquently.

Connectivity of a Community - Okinawa is the birthplace of Karate, and many people travel from around the globe to practice with the Sensei of the current time. Many come for their kata to be corrected, a better understanding of waza, the practice of Kobudo and for authentic rank promotion within their organizations and groups.....

Members of both the Eastbourne dojo and Bristol dojo from Matsubayashi-ryu Karate-do (England) recently had the honour of attending and taking part in the annual get together and training weekend organised by the EMKA.

The topics covered were wide and varied, but all with the sole aim from the teachers of passing on many years of knowledge and experience of traditional Matsubayashi-ryu karate.

Our sincere thanks go to Ralf Budde, Sensei and his students for hosting a really first-class event.

Some excellent photographs below, taken by Mr Roland Geisheimer.

It's said that there are two kinds of people in this world: those who believe they can and those believe they can't.

Both of them are quite right!!

If you want to start your journey studying traditional Okinawan karate, we hold classes every Monday, Wednesday and Friday evening. Why not reach out to us and see if this is something that might suit you?

The focus in our classes is on natural body movements and these can help with general fitness and aid long life - that's the plan anyway ☺️

We really do look forward to welcoming you to our 'Dojo' soon.

Sally Woolston’s Visit to Okinawa in November, 2022 - Wow what a trip!!I haven’t had the chance to return to Okinawa since 2016. Usually every second year is my year to travel there, but in 2018 I forewent my ticket and let my eldest son go in my place so he could have the experience before he set off to University.  Then boom, Covid struck in 2020 ...
